Minnesota town reaches 54 below zero

Minnesota's cold spot proved true to its name early Monday.

Embarrass, Minn., a famously cold weather station manned by weather observer Roland Fowler, reported a staggering 54-below-zero temperature.

Fowler said it was the coldest he has recorded in about seven years. "It's pretty numbing, that's for sure,'' Fowler said.

Fowler said a run at the record of 60-below-zero, set by cold-weather rival Tower in 1996, is not likely. A warm-up is expected later Monday.

The township of Embarrass is located between Ely and Virginia in northeastern Minnesota. It is often the coldest spot in the state, and occasionally takes cold-spot honors for the continental U.S.

Fowler is a weather observer for the Duluth office of the National Weather Service, and reports daily temperatures taken in a weather station in his backyard. He also does weather reports on local radio stations and reports his findings every morning to The Weather Channel.

Tower reported a reading of 47-below on Monday, while Babbitt recorded 51-below and International Falls reported 44 below.

I live in central Minnesota.

When I got up this morning, it was -33 here.
But, better days ahead. Supposed to get in the 20s tomorrow. Will be a regular heat wave.

I've lived in Arizona and Minnesota.

Coldest temp I have been outside in: -40 F
Hottest temp I have been outside in: 120 F

The coldest i saw here was minus -52 C and with the wind factor - 74 C.

Oh men that was cooooooold......
