The riot gear was actually for the protection of the umps, who had to reverse 2 calls during the game: The Home run ball by Bellhorn, which had been called a ground rule double, then ruled a homerun; and the call of ARod out at first, after he had been initially called safe after intentionally knocking the ball out of Arroyo's glove. There had been baseballs and other debris thrown out on to the field, and probably no shortage of threats towards the umpires. I'd hate to face 54,000 angry Yankees fans too!!
