Why do I have to troubleshoot to get online?

I hope this is the right thread guys.
About a week ago, I felt my laptop was a little slow. I Googled it & a tech site told me to go to, start, run, msconfig, services & to uncheck the things I didn't need to run at set up.
I more or less unchecked everything that I felt I didn't need. ( can you tell I'm not a techie?)
Since then, every time I go online, I have to click on my connection on the task bar tray, and click on troubleshoot, then, I click on 'apply this' and that's how I get online. Every so often, it disconnects & I have to go thru the same thing every single time.
I have a Sumsung Galaxy Ace cell phone. I have my wi-fi on it. But, I tether to connect it to my laptop. I have absolutely NO issues with my smartphone. It just seems to be the connection TO my laptop.

Guys, I wanted to come in & let you all know, that I have solved my problem...:confused
I had manually turned off my actual connection! :-o
I can't believe that I was this stooopid...But, hey, we live & learn. But, I am so glad I have signed up anyways. What a wonderful learning experience it is in here. I'll be back again & again.
