Why do PC makers no longer ship recovery disk or installation disk these days.:eek:

If some thing happence and you cannot boot into windows or windows gets corrupted how can you fix it. Yes with out the recovery disk or installation disk how can you fix it. How are you to reinstall windows with out the installation disk.

Sorry but I'm confused why retailers no longer ship recovery disk or installation disk these days and what you are suppose to do in a event some thing could happen and you have to reinstall windows.

None of the major branded manufacturers have shipped physical recovery disks with new 'OEM' systems for many many years.
Many of them have an image on the system that can be burnt and used for recovery. Dell did that for a long time.
Since Windows 7 all you need is the COA Product Key (not even that is now needed for Win 8 or 10) and you just download a new Windows set up file.
Your COA Product key is on a sticker on the system as well as the SALES documents. Users who never make a record of it sometimes end up realising their mistake. A computer is not a washing machine or cooker or microwave. And you wouldn't lose the documents for that in case it broke down either.
All the systems come with a recovery data drive but it is the OWNER'S responsibility to make a back up of their system periodically just for the worst case scenario if they cannot access that either

If YOU personally have an issue you need to deal with, then spell it out here clearly with the exact brand name, model number and Operating System and we can help you.

Money for the most part. Supplying DVDs or a USB drive with a new PC is an added cost when it can be easily created by the end user.

When you first boot a PC, you should be prompted to create Recovery Media. Windows 8 and 10 have built in recovery options if you hold down the Shift key while restarting the machine.

So if I understand it is up to the owner to make there own recovery disk now days.

So all they give you now is product key these days a sticker on the computer and in the documents that came with the computer. And it is up to you to download windows on DVD or USB stick in event you may need to reinstall windows.

They are cheep and don't want to give you a recovery disk now days or installation disk.

Also on side note when should you use recovery disk vs just installing windows.

Yes. It is YOUR system so it is YOUR responsibilty.
The rest of your comment is irrelevant at this moment until YOU tell us what your problem is, what the brand and model and OS are, then we can help.

Well, We'll need to know which version of Windows you are using.

Discs are handy for installing or repairing Windows if a hard drive has failed. If you can't boot into Windows, you will need a disc image in that case as well. I can provide you a link to OS images on my Google Drive. Or you can PM me and I can mail you a DVD as well.

Also, you can download images from Microsoft for Windows 7, but you have to input your license key for retail versions only.

Windows 8 and later versions do not come with a license key COA. Only Windows 7 and earlier. With Win8 and later OS versions you need to retrieve your key with keyfinder software.

It's not about being cheap, it's also about licensing and OS discs just floating around.

In the US, we haven't had recovery or Windows disks given with a new computer for about 10 years. In fact, there is little printed material. The manual is on the computer's hard drive.

I also suggest you write down the Windows serial number because the label may fade and not knowing that can be a problem if anyone needs to reinstall the OS.

The first thing I do is make my recovery DVD and my drivers and programs disks if that is part of the eRecovery program.

I might also take a copy of the manual and put it on a USB stick. If the hard drive goes, the manual is gone forever. When I have time, I look it over and if there are sections I especially want, I print those out and store in a case with the recovery disks.

I have a case for each computer in the house, currently 7, with any material and notes on upgrades, like RAM, hard drives, etc.

The first part is not entirely true. I have three systems that shipped originally with Windows 8, and many others I maintain, and all have an OEM COA Product key sticker. But yes getting the Key is easy with any of several free programs, but with 8 and 10 the key is not generally needed for reinstall unless specific hardware was changed prior to reinstall.

So the OS images allows you to make windows bootable so you can reinstall windows.

You must download windows onto DVD or USB stick than download OS images to make the DVD or USB stick bootable so you can reinstall windows.

If you simply cannot access the recovery drive (quite rare) you then download a new Windows OS set up file - preferably on a USB as it is automatically bootable - then reinstall the OS. USB is bootable straight off, a DVD is NOT. Unless it is Windows 8 or 10, it is less straightforward.
When you actually get around to telling us the OS in question, the advice will be better.

Can you explain in bold what do you mean the key is not needed. Why would Microsoft allow that. You would think Microsoft would want to make sure windows 10 came with your computer.

What's the original (and present one if different) Operating System you created this thread about?
    Answer that.

Older systems may not be able to boot install media from a USB stick.

Your best bet is always to burn a DVD unless the USB recovery media has been created at first boot. If there is no CD/DVD drive that kind of tells you what you should use.

The key for Windows 8 and 10 is stored on the machine in the BIOS, much like the old SLP keys for Windows XP.

ONCE AGAIN, is there a specific OS which you need information for?

In Windows 8 and 10, the OEM can embed the product key in the UEFI (the successor to the BIOS), which the installation media will check during the installation process.

What is point of a recovery disk if the hard-drive got formatted or the partition got messed up and cannot boot into windows?

    What Microsoft is saying.

System recovery options can help you repair Windows if a serious error occurs. To use system recovery options, you'll need a Windows installation disc or access to the recovery options provided by your computer manufacturer. If you don't have either of those choices, you can create a system repair disc to access system recovery options.

The Recovery Disk is bootable and if your hard drive got formatted, it can be used to re-install Windows (the OEM version that was installed on the computer originally). That's why it's imperative to create the Recovery Disk the first thing after getting and booting the new computer into Windows.

I could get a recovery drive or cd for windows 10.

Depending on who your maker is,Either Hp,Dell, these two makers should send a recovery disk if requested on the web site. Most of them ask for for computer model and info.

Because when you boot recovery media, there are a few options. There is automatic repair, a full format and reinstall (low level, does not wipe the MBR), or advanced options under a DOS command line prompt.

So is the system you want to recover/reinstall Windows 7, 8 or 10?

  23. the mekanic

For Windows 7, a DVD is required with the .iso image burned on it to perform a full reinstall.

He could also use ISO to USB to create a bootable (8 GB) USB flash drive. I've done it.

Not every machine is capable of booting from USB. That is BIOS/UEFI dependent.

If the OP actually bothered to answer the question now asked at least 5 times (what Operating System they are dealing with - they have mentioned all OSs but not their one) then the advice would be very clear, very easy and very simple.
This thread has become a waste of time.

The operating system was asked for in thread No's 2, 6. 11, 13, 22, 26. Not bad going for a single request!
