Re: Why does my vista computer say 'preparing desktop', then load a fresh new desktop

    is this part of problem

Yes but this is not a malware problem. You have the environment variable for your user account set incorrectly. It is set to the below:

    USERPROFILE=C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile

And is should be set to

    USERPROFILE=C:\Users\1

Also you do not have your TEMP environment variable set correctly. It is set to:

    TEMP=C:\Windows\TEMP

And it should be set to

    C:\Users\1\AppData\Local\Temp

I haven't forgotten about this thread, I just haven't come up with anything useful. I should have some time today/tonight.

I'm not sure if that is relevant or not because you are currently signing into the Administrator account rathe than the "1" account. If you still have MGtools available perhaps you could run that again and upload a new log. We could see how those variables are set.

Re: Why does my vista computer say 'preparing desktop', then load a fresh new desktop

    Let's see...just to review

You are now running the Administrator account as your primary account. Those environment variables you mentioned are no longer applicable to the current problem since the Administrator accounts variables seem to be set up correctly.

Your newest account "zen" has never actually appeared on the Welcome screen or you can't log into it. Which is it, does it appear on Welcome screen?

And can you go into event viewer as before but try to open one of the errors for User Profile General (NOT user profile service)and see if it names a specific file in the details (blue arrow) area. I want to know if C:\Users\Default is mentioned anywhere in those details.

    Hi,

I see it is just a warning but still take a quick look to see if a file is mentioned. You are in the correct place.
My picture with the arrows above is from your post #49 in this thread. It looks like on November 17 2012 you had some warnings about User Profile General event ID 1509; what does it say under details for any one of those errors?

Re: Why does my vista computer say 'preparing desktop', then load a fresh new desktop

So there seems to be at least some problem with permissions in that Users\Default folder. I still haven't figured out how to fix it. Now that I know it is definitely related to that folder I will experiment a bit and see if I can duplicate the problem.

One last bit of information to rule something out, please rightclick Computer and select Properties. Under ComputerName section is your Workgroup: named WORKGROUP?

Re: Why does my vista computer say 'preparing desktop', then load a fresh new desktop

    That looks right.

Okay, I'm going to try to narrow things down to a permissions issue. It looks from the previous screenshot that it is an access problem rather than corruption. I realize this has been a drawn out process and want to narrow down the possibilities before making any suggestions. I have Sunday dinner guests so I won't get much done today but should be able to come up with something soon.

Re: Why does my vista computer say 'preparing desktop', then load a fresh new desktop

    Thanks for being patient.

I only have a minute or two but I did see this one program that might fix the folder associations on your "1" account. It would only be for use on the "1" account. I was hoping you might download and unzip the program. Then run the elevate.exe file to open the program. A screenshot of its main window should tell us if it could be useful to try to fix the "1" account and if it could fix it, then it would tell us that the problem with that account was also permissions rather than corruption. If it can't fix that account there is really nothing lost.

The usage of the program would be to highlight the "1" account in the top pane of the window. And then higlight the entry for C:\Users\1 in the bottom pane and then hit the assign button. You don't have to do that yet but it would useful if you could just take a screenshot of the main window and then upload it.

The download is at the end of this page: http://iwr.cc/reprofiler

The screenshot is probably too large (<99kb) to attach to your post. Zip it up and then you can attach it (zip files are allowed to be larger). To zip: right-click and select Send to and choose Compressed folder. Then attach the file to a post here.

That screenshot seems to indicate that you are signed into the "1" account is that correct? I thought the 1 account wasn't working correctly and giving you the temporary account/profile popup each time and thus you were using the Administrator account.

Re: Why does my vista computer say 'preparing desktop', then load a fresh new desktop

Interesting. Your folders are set correctly according to it but it is indicating that the "1" account is currently logged into.
Reboot, open the program again and see if it again lists an X next to the 1 account in the top box.

If it has no X then I would highlight the line in the top box for the 1 account and also highlight the line for C:\Users\1 in the bottom box and hit the assign button. See if it completes succesfully and then reboot and try to boot into the 1 account.

Re: Why does my vista computer say 'preparing desktop', then load a fresh new desktop

I'd also like to know the security properties of the C:\Users\Default folder. You have to have hidden and System files showing to see that folder.

So go to C:\Users\Default folder and right-click it and select Properties. Click on the Security tab. Click the Advanced button. See if yours looks like mine with both SYSTEM and Administrators having Full Control of that folder. Also that the other users have permission to Read and Execute.

Re: Why does my vista computer say 'preparing desktop', then load a fresh new desktop

    Hi,

Your screenshot is for C:\Users but I want the same for C:\Users\Default. You have to have hidden and system files showing. So hit the Organize link at top left of Explorer and then the Folder and Search options. Then on the View tab select Show Hidden Files and also untick the box for Hide Protected Operating System Files. Now you should see the Default folder in C:\Users and right click that and get the Properties and the Security tab and the Advanced button and take the screenshot. I think it will be the same as mine but just want to make sure.

Also before closing the window click on the Owner tab and just make sure it is showing that Administrators are the current owner of that folder.

Everything is looking normal from what I am seeing so far, that is why I have been putting off making any changes. I'm not really finding the cause of the problem.

That's cool, don't run the Assign command in reprofiler. I don't understand why you have the X ther for user 1.

Do give the screenshot for C:\Users\Default described in my last post. I'll read up on the reprofiler and on the User Profile Service error again. Everything so far looks correct and the only fix I have seen other than permissions is a repair install. I just want to see if I can find anything else to try.

Re: Why does my vista computer say 'preparing desktop', then load a fresh new desktop

It looks like we might be getting somewhere. As far as I can tell the owner should be Administrators rather than System but that would be my second choice to try. I have two things to try which I will put in two posts. Try this one first to make sure all files in that Default folder are available to the Administrators:

See pic below. In the third box you highlight ADMINISTRATORS And tick both boxes at the bottom left, then hit Apply and then OK. Reboot and try to log into zen account:

Re: Why does my vista computer say 'preparing desktop', then load a fresh new desktop

I'm using Win7 but Vista should be about the same. Try highlighting Administrators in your third window and then using the Edit button to see if it brings up the window with the two check boxes.

BTW, do you have a blank CD available to create a repair disc? It could be a safeguard to get to a restore point if anything goes wrong. Not to do with this change but just something to have available.

Re: Why does my vista computer say 'preparing desktop', then load a fresh new desktop

I'm not sure I understand. The window looks like it is set correctly, then you hit yes to change permissions then what is the message? Usually you would see it flash various folder/file names as it changes the permissions on that folder.

The repair disc is just a bootable disc that takes you to repair options if Windows doesn't start normally. Changing permissions should not effect Windows starting but I think it couldn't hurt to have one available. If we can't change the permissions this way then the other thing I was going to try was to change the owner of the Default folder from SYSTEM to Administrators. Every thread I have read about the Default folder has the owner as Administrators yet yours seems to be owned by SYSTEM. I can't find any instances where someone's Default folder is owned by SYSTEM. I can't imagine that it was randomly changed but think it is worth a shot to try giving it to Administrators but want a Restore Point just in case.

To create a repair disc you just type create in the Start/Search box and it will come up with "Create a System Repair Disc" click on that and load your blank CD and it will write the disc for you.

Because there were so many false starts with that zen account, please go ahead and create another account and see if it also has an empty New menu or if works normally. If it too is broken you can just delete the new account. I'm trying to figure out if it is a system wide problem or just related to the zen account.

    Hi,

I'm not going to have much time over the next couple of days. I'm just wondering if you have completely ruled out a reinstall. It would seem like that would be the most practical way to get you going again. I'm not sure I will be able to completely fix the problem.

I can take another look at this but it seems something is fundamentally wrong that I have not seen before.
