Why is it? - Spyware related

Why is it that I havn't had a single piece of spyware since 2002, yet all my friends are swimming in the stuff?

There has to be a reason....

 

Just about the same here... (Almost) no spyware in years now. The 2 times I got something nasty was 1: I came online to download a firewall and got infected before I installed it (thank god for adaware), and 2: Because a highly respected moderator (on another forum) recommended a page that contained malicious code that he wasn't aware of, he was mortified when I told him what that page did to my poor computer!

I think they get the shit because they don't listen to our advice! They don't protect themselves. They turn the firewall OFF because they can't bother to adjust settings or call us to ask how to do it. They brows to bad pages and after that they insist they didn't...

Bottom line, I think many of them don't want to know how their computer works, what can happen to it, how the protection programs work etc. They just want to hit the power button and everything is supposed to work without them having to do anything about it.

That is fine, but then they should have someone come in and do maintenance every other week on it! And yes, I do that on some of them...

So what friend is in trouble now, Goldfish? And how many hours will it take to fix it?

 

Maybe your spyware scanner isn't any good......

True, some humanoids think a computer should just run itself, by itself, and never have any problems or issues. Wouldn't it be nice and easy (and boring, I guess) if computers were like that? Well they aint. If all they wanted was a foolproof typwriter, games and email machine, I usually ask them why they didn't just but an electric typewriter and a Playstation connected to the net.

Initial ignorance, and then learning from the experience, I don't have a problem with. Lazyness and arogance is another thing. Usually resulting in the offending customer, being charged top dollar, just for being anal.

 

Since you have mentioned misstyping the address. I noticed once www.www.majorgeeks.com . Im not quite sure exactly if it was that but something along those lines.

It might have been this work computer. They're a bit thick here with spyware and patching up *shhh*
Also is it just me since we're on this or does everyone gets error occured while loging out then prompt to redoit. Or just server overload

 

BTW, I update my spyware defs once a week. So

Also, I think I'd notice if I had spyware, lending to the performance hit most of them give, and the intrusion they have on the OS. I know my machine inside out, I'd be able to tell if somthing was different and I hadn't done it myself... n

Check out the new spyware scanner from Microsoft it's a beta but I put it on a friends computer that was full of junk and it found a lot more even after running Spybot and AdAware.
