Why is Java update aborting, telling me I need to load it from a CD-ROM?

Discussion in 'Software' started by conceptualclarity, Jul 3, 2013.

  1. My attempts to update from Java 7 Update 21 to Java 7 Update 25 are failing every time. When I almost get to the finish line, I get this message : "the feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Install the 'Java 7 Update 21' disk and click OK.
    Use source :
    1 "

Then on one attempt : "The path '1' cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try again to find the installation package 'jre1.7.0_17-c.msi' in a folder from which you can install the product."

Who has ever heard of updating Java from a CD-ROM instead of the Internet? And why is it referring to the previous update?

Anybody know a way out of this?

I don't have a long history of failed updates, but in recent months .NET Framework updates have also been failing on my old computer.

  4. Thank you very much, you two! I followed the link from Security Garden and tried to use the Java Uninstall Tool. All it did was crash my browser repeatedly. I had several more aborted installations, including one with more CD-ROM talk. So I uninstalled Java 7 Update 21 with Iobit Uninstaller. Over 500 entries! Then I downloaded jre-7u25 from Windows x86 Offline. It failed at the tail end, telling me a previous uninstallation was incomplete and suggested I reboot. So I did reboot, and this time the installation finally worked, going through quickly. I checked Iobit, and I still have Java(TM) Update 6 Update 45. (Actually I don't think that was showing when I did the uninstallation on IObit.) I hope that's OK. Why does Java come in pairs? Two Java Plug-ins are listed also.

Remove any version 6 of Java; it is a security risk.

  6. Does the Java(TM) serve a different function?

You may have the 32-bit and 64-bit versions, as I have (see attachment).

If this is version 6, uninstall it, as plodr has already suggested.

  8. I got SUMo recently. SUMo detects more of my programs than other update programs I possess. It told me to my great surprise I have two versions of Java (6.0.130.3 and 6.0.180.7) that don't show up in Add or Remove Programs or anywhere else. I clicked on "Open containing folder" and verified they are indeed there, so I need to decide how to get rid of them. Is there a preferred way? As I said above, the so-called Java Uninstall Tool was swiftly crashing my browser rather than doing anything for me.

Java loads a plugin with the browser, close all browsing sessions then run the Java uninstaller - or do so immediately after a reboot.

    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
    2. uninstall your java (i could not uninstall it because it was looking for jre1.7.0_17-c.msi file, also when i wanted to upgrade to newer version so i was stucked)
    3. reboot your pc
    4. install the newest java using offline installator (the one which is larger file ~30mb in case 25 version)
