Why is my hard drive usually reported as fragmented?

I have a Windows XP PC (2002 model), and TuneUp Utilities keeps saying that the hard disks are fragmented, even after the TuneUp maintenance shows that it's been fixed.
All the lastest Windows updates are installed.

How much free hard disk space do you have? try running Windows Defrag and see what that reports.

Some fragmentation is unavoidable. Poorly designed software might remind you over and over again about fragmentation even if the amount is minimal. My suggestion, find a better tool.

Thanks for the replies. Windows defrag says I don't need to defragment.
As far as drive space, 27.8 gb free (out of 55.8 gb).

    Cool,

Dont worry bout defragging then. I believe that you need 25% free to successfully defrag... hence my question.

If you do a lot of file moving, defrag once a month. My work machine, I maybe defrag it once every other, or every three months, since everything is on a network drive for the files I work with all day long. Now on the other hand, I do a disk cleanup around every 30 to 45 days, regardless if it is work, or home.
