why only 3 pci's?

hello again geeks how are yeah?
i was doing some window shopping for parts for a pc i plan on building in the near future and i noticed something. the new motherboards with pci express only have 3 pci slots? does anyone know why this is? many thanks, max

 

Mostly because, why do you need more than 3 pci slots?

Typically the higher-end boards have decent audio, typically with Co-ax/optical audio outputs, with onboard giga-ethernet. What more could one want?

Most support Raid 0 (Stripe (worst option ever)), 1 (Mirror (good solid backup)), 1+0 (Raid 10) / 0 + 1 (quite different from raid 10, same performance). Asus Highend dollar offers Raid 5 (excellent).

 

i thought at least gigabyte would have more then 3, seeing they have the i-ram and everything

 

Yeah, it's mostly because people generally don't need many PCI slots anymore. At home, I have 1 PCI card in my computer.

 

To say they only have 3 PCI slots is misleading.

Most also have several PCIe x1 slots which are backward compatible if need-be. This brings the total to about 4-6.

I can't really think of why you would want more.

Boards these days are packed with USB 2.0, and some also have Firewire etc, so gone are the days where you need to add these.

You didn't read or understand my post very well.

Along with the "normal" 3 PCI slots, most PCIxpress boards also have 2-3 PCIe x1 slots.

This brings the total number of PCI slots to 4-6, which is about the same as an AGP board.
