    Hello
I have a wireless router and will be at a hotel with WI - FI.
I never noticed options before as I never broughta laptop with me.
At a friend's house I can use the cable from their isp modem to go into my router.
Is there some way I can get my laptop behind the router when at a hotel which gives you a password?
I am an average pc user and thank you for your help.

Why do you need to bring a wireless router if the hotel is offering wireless internet access?

When booking into the hotel ask at reception for the wireless key for you to connect to their network, there is usually a charge for this. Once you have the revelent access key open your network connections and search for wireless connections, the hotels will show in there double click to connect then input the access key when prompted..... just a word of warning... make sure all file sharing is turned off and your firewall is activated and your AV is fully up-dated.

    >>Excuse my naiveté, so after obtaining the key or code how do I manually connect cables?
At home the ISP cable goes into the modem. From there the cable goes from the modem to the router and from the router to the pc.
Is their wireles signal taking the place of my ISP modemand cable from it?
Will I now be behind my router?
    Thank you for your patience.

You will be surfing on their wireless network. You don't need a router or modem or cables.

    Hi,

IF your laptop has wireless capability you will not need any other equiptment other than the laptop!!! IF your laptop is not wireless capable then enquire if the said hotel has an ethernet connection socket in your room, if so then all you need is an RJ45 cable that will plug into the ethernet wall socket then into the ethernet port on your laptop. I have uploaded a picture as for the type of cable you need if your machine is not wireless capable.

Exactly as I do this all the time, the Hotel will have a WiFi key for you to use for access to their Wifi or if they also have LAN which many do, they will have a option for you to follow.

After using the key to the motel I then trust only Norton and lose the security of the router which brings me back to where I started?
If you all do it, so will I.
The pc is wi fi ready but thank you for the picture.
I have enclosed a picture of the desktop settings. I share no folders or printer but use the router to communicate with the laptop.
If I may i would like to now if the settings are ok and if so I shall do the same to the laptop.

Security is basically the same as if in a hotspot.
Best options are 1- stay behind a router at home or 2-
get a card rom ATT or Verizon or Cox or .....

    Hi Peter

Those options are fine, I would maybe turn media streaming off, but it should not be a security issue anyways, just a personal thing.

All I would say is as you are using a non secure WiFi connection as in the hotels, is to not do banking or any transaction type things and just use it for general surfing only... I personally use my mobile phones 3G HSDPA connection for any secure things and a hotels WiFi for general surfing.

    >> I shall attend to media streaming.
From what I have learned my previous post is where I am comfortable, behind the router or with a Communication company card. I thinkthe odds are a little more in my favor altho not perfect.
My reason is that is is a bit nmore difficult for me to fix problems than for more skilled users.
I have learned a "bunch" and would like to thank you David and all those who contributed.
I am still looking for the day when I can contribute instead of taking.

    Hi Peter

Hey you do fine and your questions do I believe will help others with similar questions, so you do contribute.

I think you'll be fine with the WiFi or LAN from a hotel, with the info that all have given above, its always about risk reduction.
