What are your thoughts on this subject.Which do you think is better.

The only difference i see is Range.

They say that 5Ghz range provides faster data rates transfer. But from my experience not all devices can handle the 5Ghz frequencies. If any thing it will cause problems.

2.4 is the normal setting on most wifi setups.Unless you are some Guru wifi guy.

2.4Ghz does offer farther distance in range. But it may perform at a slower rate then at the 5Ghz frequencies.

Every thing depends on interference. How many walls you have to go through.Or if you are in a wear house like i normally am.The range can be cut short dramatically due to the fact a lot of Big buildings like ware houses have metal roofs and other metal objects like fans systems support beams that can block a signal easy.

Like for instance me i like to listen to music on my cell when i am out side working cutting the grass.I have about 3 acres of grass to cut and no where near the range needed to use my full wifi.I don't like to use my normal cell data unless i am on the road.

Even using the 5Ghz band barely reach's half of my property. So i need a Wifi booster signal. To make up the range.Of course it is pron to hackers i guess. But they how have to break my password.

Theoretically, and under the exact same conditions, 5 GHz is better.
The biggest downside to 2.4 GHz is the number of other devices using the same frequency band.

These two articles briefly compare the differences between 2.4 & 5 GHz.

I have an ASUS RT-AC88U dual band AC 3100 router and found when I was living in Rowville the 5GHz wi fi was much better due to congestion in the area on the 2.4GHz frequency. Coverage was two neighbors either side (quarter acre blocks) without a range booster and that was still full strength. Now that I have moved to a much more rural area and a third of an acre it doesn't make much difference because there is no interference here. Heck over the back fence are just herds of cows and I don't see them playing on their ipads or iphones lol

All the same I have most devices on the 5GHz band because they were already setup before I moved and.........well I am lazy and dodge work if I can hehehe

Since moving I haven't done a range check but the data rates appear to be the same as previously on 5GHz.
I am having the house cabled for CAT 6 in two weeks to setup a proper high speed network and when it is finished I will do some speed and range checks. The wifi is mainly used for android phones, android tablets, my MSI gaming laptop, a Bluesound music streamer, a couple of smart TVs and my MFC printer/scanner/fax. All the real computers and NASs are hard wired for the best possible speed

Here is my router and with all those antennas the coverage should be good

The thing is i just might buy one of them range extenders that just plug into the wall.

This modem is a Ethernet modem with wireless built in.Works pretty good. The only problem i have is range. This should be good for me when i get my one check.https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-N300-Range-Extender-EX2700/dp/B00L0YLRUW

I plan on building a new desktop in two weeks.

Instead of plugging the range extender into a power point why not plug into an extension cord and mount the range extender as high as possible to give the best coverage. Maybe even outside on the front or back porch so there are less walls to block the signal. Hmmm...... 3 acres is a good size block:)

Let us know how the new build goes and good luck

A lot of them wall plug mounters require a Cat 5 or 6 Ethernet port.I don't want to drill thought my new floor and walls.

Get a powerpoint outside on the porch and for ethernet use an ethernet over power adapter so the power lines become your network connection.
Something like this is 500Mb/s https://www.pccasegear.com/products...VDnZgCh1AmA5kEAQYBCABEgLHXvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
or spend a bit more and get 1Gb/s https://www.mwave.com.au/product/netgear-pl1000-1-port-gigabit-ethernet-powerline-kit-ab84599

I wish I could have that attitude. 6 phone lines (before cell phones), speakers, Appletalk (Cat 3), Cat 5, Cat 6, fiber optic, alarm/CCTV system and moving things around makes for a LOT of holes.

CCTV's can now use wireless options.I don't know how old your system is.But the wireless models are wireless and the only thing you have to plug it into is a electrical outlet.

You can probably buy a set on amazon for around 300 dollars.

I try to use 5ghz over 2.4ghz but some devices I have are only 2.4ghz, so taken to not allowing router to auto manage but I have split the band to specific non default channels to try and remove issues.
