Wifi Download Speeds

I was wondering if anyone might be able to explain to me why one device on a wifi network receives higher (double) download speeds than another device?

I have 100 mbps connection but none of my wireless devices can get any better than 50 mbps consistently, however when my ISP sent a tech over he ran the same speed test on his phone and received 70 mbps while all other devices in our home were getting no better than 45 mbps. We were all sitting at my dinning room table so no one was more than 4 feet closer to the router than any other person.

 

Just because your router is getting the speed doesn't mean your devices can on wifi.
All devices have a limit of up and down stream based off there internal wifi.

You can google what devices max up/down load speeds are on home wifi's, example a Galaxy S6 Edge download speed clocked at 185.67Mbps and upload speed at 169.18Mbps . My link speed is at 351Mbps on my Samsung 5 active but max speed of internet is 85/85 Mbit/s up n down with my router rated up to 800Mbit/s + for wifi. It all bares down to limit of technology + radio signal interference.

 

Thank you both for answering my question. I did some limited research because I do not really understand what I am reading. My laptop is capable of 144.4 Mbps using 20MHZ, which my router is set at, 300 Mbps at 40MHZ. When I got to the Android devices Samsung Tab 4 10.1 and Samsung Tab 3 10.1 I got lost. Is there a difference between MBit/s and Mbps?

My confusion to comes from test on download speeds ran on my devices and each have obtained 70+ Mbps along with my laptop. In fact every device will receive similar test results when run one after the other. So if I run a speed test on one device every other device will be +/- 5Mbps of each other.

The first month I upgraded my internet service every device ran at approx 75 Mbps. That would cause me to believe that each device is capable of those speeds. Lately every device is around 40 Mbps down load speed with upload speeds around 68 Mbps when everything is going good but the speeds can drop to .04 Mbps.

So I'm thinking based on what i have read that typical speeds would be around 40 Mbps and on a good day, all the stars aligned just right, I can reach the higher 70 Mbps speeds. Am i correct with that conclusion?

It's also possible that your ISP is limiting your download/upload speeds. This often happens when you have an unlimited data plan, or when you get a certain amount of free data.

Also, it depends on how busy the site you're visiting is.

 

I changed my broadcast frequency from 20HZ to 40HZ now all my devices have double in download speed. I read somewhere that it was not advisable to change this setting because there could be more interference from other networks. I run wifiinfoview and there are only 2 other networks near me both on different channels so I am not sure how this change would be bad. Not to mention every device in my home has double in speed.
