    Hello,

about 3 weeks ago, my wifes acer aspire 5536 laptop showed an unwelcomed 'operating system not found' on the screen. I have since removed the cover and felt and listened to the hard drive and it is definitely not even spinning up. either that, or it's the most calm, quiet hard drive ever. I think the hard drive failed.

I am considering purchasing the hard drive listed below for this acer aspire 5536 computer. will this hard drive work in this computer? I don't want to make the mistake of purchasing it and find out it doesn't work because it's too much capacity or LBA addressing is incorrect or some other reason. the expert advice I request is most appreciated.

here's links to newegg and info about the hard drive.

Your two links are bad. If they were sent by email to you, they will not work for anyone else.

The specs in the Acer site say
I wonder how much larger than 500GB is acceptable?
I searched and found 640GB and 750GB refurbed drives for sale for Aspire 5536.
    I can't find any information on a 1TB hd.
If it were me, I wouldn't chance buying something unknown. I'd stick with the sizes mentioned.

    plodr,

thanks for pointing out the bad links and the reply.

this is the same thing, I think:

I am hesitant to purchase until I hear from someone with more expertise than I have that they are sure (providing that the hard drive is not DOA) it will work.

    plodr,

I will pass on this hard drive and wait for a 500g deal to occur

    thanks.

On a 500GB drive, I prefer the WD Scorpio Black series. In addition to having generally good reviews, I've been using one for over two years without any issues (compared to an OEM Hitachi and a replacement Hitachi, each of which died within 6 months).

I also do not like "refurb" drives. My experience is they have a much higher failure rate than new drives.

Considering it takes at least a few hours to install Windows and all the security updates (not to mention all your data), it's worth spending a few extra bucks for a quality hard drive that has good user reviews.

I usually read the reviews. 29% gave it one egg and said the drive died in anywhere from 30 days to 5 months. That's a pretty high failure rate in a short time. I think you were smart to pass on the hard drive.

If your bios has reset or the boot order changed somehow this can happen, enter bios del or F2 when the computer boots and check to see if the drive is recognised and it's size is reported correctly,if it is it's probably not the drive.

You can also connect a laptop drive to a desktop for testing.

Just basic troubleshooting before you buy a new drive.:)
