Will SLI Boost My Overall Video Card Performance?

I'm in the process of upgrading my current system as opposed to buying a whole new one.

The video card I'm currently running is the GeForce 8600 GTS. Not the most advanced by todays standards I know, but for video editing and gaming, it's worked well.

My motherboard has SLI support, though I've never used it. My question is this...

Would it be possible, utilizing my current 8600 GTS video card to use the SLI function with a second, similar GeForce video card (one that is older, and not as expensive) to achieve performance on the level of todays higher end video cards?

    Just a thought...

    Hi

Using a second card with SLI will improve your performance, but not nearly to the point of a single GTX 400 series, or GTX 500 series, etc.

What kind of improvement can I expect? I've only experienced chugging when running newer games like Need For Speed World.

How will the SLI improve things like video editing for instance?

I'm no SLI expert, better to get Augie's opinion. I just know that another card SLI WILL help. I haven't done any SLI myself (yet).

Remember that most people are probably not going to be on this forum right now due to Christmas and New Year's.
