I have tried to download various drivers for my Dell A920 printer/scanner etc which will not work with Win7.

The dell forums have had me do several things which have not worked, now they want me to install the latest version of JAVA.

Is there any reason for me to avoid updating JaVA?. I hate to add something when my system, except for an old printer, is working fine.

The main issue seems to be my new laptop is 64 bits.

    Thanks,
    Mishkyn

Have you tried installing the printer via the "legacy hardware installer" yet? Device Manager > highlight the top icon in the pane, right-click > Add legacy hardware.

    Hi

To your question on Java, then no reason not to update as Java is much more robust these days and as you have a 64bit Windows version you'll need for maximum compatability to install both the 32bit and 64bit versions of java, but run this application first JavaRa and uninstall any older version of Java then install the latest from HERE (main links are the 32bit version adn the x64 link is listed at bottom), this will help remove any left over files that "could" cause issues.

Try after Satrows advice, to install the Vista 64bit drivers for that printer as they in theory should work ok.

    Satrow and Halo,
Thanks so much for your advice. I have tried everything BUT the legacy hardware--that is next.

The vista drivers did not work for me, the A920 is one of the few printers that really hates Win 7, but now I have something new to try.

I really needed the Java help, I was so lost.
    Thanks, Mishkyn

I have done a fair amount of looking into 64 bit, one of its main draw backs is when it comes to drivers and some programs. There may be no solution to you problem outside of a new printer. There is quite a bit of info on the net about 32 "vs" 64, most people have no need for it the main benefit is running intensive apps and somewhat improved security. I am sure not to far down the road it will be the mainstream but for now a pain for some.
