Ballmer had some good news for early adopters looking to get their hands on an early version of Windows 7 as soon as possible. "Today I'm excited to announce that we are releasing the beta of Windows 7," Ballmer said.

Members of Microsoft's TechNet and MSEN communities have immediate access to the beta, while the general public will be able to download it for trial directly from Microsoft starting Friday. "I encourage you all to get out and download it," Ballmer said.

The above is from the article.

Microsoft should get creative and lose the 'Windows' part. Surely they can come up with something. I mean, Win 1.x, Win 2.x, Win3.x, Win 95, Win NT, Win 98, Win 98SE, Win ME, Win 2000, Win XP, Win Vista, Win 7...? rolleyes

    No different that Apples OS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, X ( and the various .1 .2 .3s etc per release)

Kinda like the naming of Linux myself, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_distributions and Ubuntu releases have some cracking names like Breezy Badger, Hoary Hedgehog and Dapper Drake.

Hahaha, too true Halo about *nix nomenclature!:-D I tried the 6801 but it couldn't install the drivers needed to connect but when I ran W7 in VM, it performed very nicely. It has it's own little recovery partition which I'm really exited about if it's the first OS on the box, no more wiping the drive to to fix it. The OEM's will probably change it to suit themselves. I can't wait for the dl!:cool:major

You guys better not slack on that download, the windows team blog claims it is only a 2.5 million download limited beta.

BTW, according to ComputerWorld one can only upgrade a Vista SP1 install with this and the 2.5M is keys only, one can still grab W7 after that and use the -slmgr to keep it alive for 120 days. It looks like some more VMWare work here as I will not jeopardize my current Vista install.

When you use these beta OS releases, do you dual boot?

    Are they normally pretty buggy?

Just curious. I'm not planning on downloading it. I'll wait on buying a new laptop now and get one with Win 7.

  10. augiedoggie

augiedoggie The Canadian Loon - LocoAugie (R.I.P. 2012)

Well, I always dual booted with Vista, best option when one doesn't have a dedicated test rig, this time it looks like I won't be able to. At least I can run it in vmware.

No, beta's from MS are not overly buggy from my experience but one doesn't ever know if you'll be the next victim! Been there and done that!:-D

Ya, wait for W7 as it seems to be ontrack for a release at the end of the year. There's no real point in getting a Vista rig now unless you really have to. Mind you, like with any new OS there will be issues.:)

Nope I tend to clean install on one of my laptops and this time may also in Virtual Machine install on my main desktop as I have a few different senarios to run.

Buggy... well can be for some and not others, depends on PC hardware/drivers and what software is installed, many variables add up to causing a PC to crash.

Win7 pre-beta M3 build 6801 thats currently on my laptop is ruuning perfectly, no major issues at present and is very stable and way way ahead of Vista at this point in development.

Dont think its live yet Steve, likely will be in 1-2hrs time but judging by the server load on the Windows blog here its going to be tough to get a download http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/wi...7/the-windows-7-beta-kicks-off-this-week.aspx but the downloads likely to come off here >>>> http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/

Do you have technet account as its on there , dunno on MSDN as not logged into my account.

Likely as its not released yet for the CPP program, the TechNet link will only work if you have TechNet subscription until later today...... give it about a few hours and at times TechNet do post the CPPs other wise its the link I posted AFAIK or been told.

You do understand that this is not the final version of Windows 7 and is likely to possibly be buggy and crash your PC or cause some hardware and software not to work properly?

If your PC works well in Vista then your 80% there.

I'm giving up on this, it's not worth my time or aggravation just for a key. I'll just simply slmgr it once a month for the 120 day trial, that'll take way less time than I have already wasted.http://www.pronetworks.org/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif I'll grab it once the feeding frenzy is over.:-D

EDIT: Ya Tim, that's the blurb I'm getting now.

Yup, though apparently those with MSDN or Technet subscriptions will get a version that can be directly installed without all this upgrading crap, I will not upgrade my main install, this is a job for VMWare!:) I'll know later on as people are getting back from work and itching to get their paws on it.:-D

Yes sites getting battered, sadly many will be in the software forum soon with tails of woe and how Windows 7 is poo, sadly many do not understand the concept of BETA.

Two installs I have done on seperate machines and both where as smooth as hell, only needed on one machine to manually update with vista drivers the media card hardware. Cannot wait for some sites to play on benchmarking tests of XPvs Vista vs Windows 7 as testing beta software is a waste of time and useless excersise.

Well it may do for now as its beta software, so some upgrade routes may not as yet have been tested so are not available yet! As I have a NDA on what I do know of Windows 7 tests, I will and not read or been told this info, but will guess at while many did not upgrade to Vista and are still on XP, it stands to reason that an upgrade route to Win7 from XP will likely be available, however their maybe a test to run first to see if your PC and hardware is compatible first as majority of PCs that run Vista ok, will run Windows 7 ok, however not all XP based PCs may (hardware dependent, if Vista drivers are available then likely it will run).

as for Windows Secrets IMHO that sites info is poor, jump in too quick and get stories wrong, Skiprearm in Vista was a prime example of FUD, rather read The Register :)

I had to sign in with my Windows Live ID for the Windows 7 free download. I don't belong to the tech site pay one. It is downloading now and a valid key came up too. Do you think this will all work?

    Thanks

    Hi

If your PCs specs are upto the job of running Windows 7 beta then yes it will work fine, upto now I have installed it 3 times on various hardware, with no issue, but all PCs where currently running Vista so drivers where available.

If this is your first beta, do be prepared for some software not to work or random and strange bugs or events, these are normal occurances as this is not final version software.

    Halo
Do you think I should cancel it? Now I am worried. Thanks

    Hi

No dont cancel download of the ISO and key as you may wish to run this beta, but personally I would only use it on a spare PC if you have one and one thats newish spec (say no more than 3yrs old).

But if this is your only PC and you are not used to test software I personally would advise that you dont install it until its released, but if you have backed up all your important files etc and are willing to jump in for a test of this then go for it as testing beta software can teach you alot about how software and operating systems work or dont.

or you could install Virtual PC 2007 (VPC) which is free and then all you need to do is setup with the Virtual PC wizard some virtual space on your hard drive and then on the VPC console click start then CD > Capture image and browse to the ISO of Windows 7, this way you can test Windows 7 but within a virtual enviroment, so fairly safe, doesnt run as quick as off hard drive but will give you a taste of this Windows version.

    Hi

Get the MajorGeeks |FL - USA| one or one off that Majorgeeks list with american flag next to them and not the x64 version.

If you're running Vista ok then its very likely that Windows 7 will run on your PC ok, as Vista drivers work fine, but the Windows 7 install finds majority of drivers for you anyway. Try Win7 in Virtual PC first, see if you like, then you could bite the bullet and go for a full clean install (full install will wipe and remove all your currently installed stuff)

With the 6801, it didn't find my ethernet drivers but worked perfectly in virtual. We''l see what happens this time, burning the ISO ATM.

Ya, I agree on the skiprearm, it wasn't tested properly IMO, anyways I don't need it or slmgr now.:) I still subscribe to it but most of what I see I don't even bother reading these days, It used to be better when Fred Langa ran the show IMO.

if you really want to learn, just dont use your good computer. you should find an older one with decent hardware to learn on. that way you wont really have to worry about screwing up your good comp.

I'm setting up a virtual server so's that I don't screw anything up!

I had two failed installs to the hard disc already so that's enough risk taking for me on my main machine, the rest will be in the VM, if something goes screwy, I can just blow it away with no recovery time to fix MBRs or BCDs, lost partitions etc.

    Hello McDreamy

    Very rough guide......

Install Virtual PC 2007 and run it, follow the Wizard that sets up the Virtual space...

    Create a Virtual Machine
Name it... could be Windows 7
    Select "other" as operating system
Depending on how much ram you have you could set this to 512mb from the default 128mb
New Virtual Hard Disk and choose a location to save this (default is Documents), I create a folder somewhere on my PC, and call it Virtual PC so use that location to run the virtual drive.
    Finish

Then once the drive is setup you need to mount the ISO file from Windows 7 download, so in Virtual PC highligh the newely made drive and click start and after a small while as its collecting data click on the top menu CD > Capture ISO and find the Windows 7 ISO and Windows 7 will start just like the normal setup and install of an operating system.

or follow Daniels guide here has pictures to follow.

You are welcome, and before I forget and you get stuck, to exit the Virtual PC window and use your Vista desktop press the right alt key and move the mouse off the window.
