Got it going in VMWare!!! Not sure why I have trouble with W7 and this rig but... since virtual works though slower, who cares eh? It might be the need to make the hidden 200MB recovery partition as shown below.

Are there issues with Win7 running apps that worked in XP but don't work in Vista? Has M$ improved that any?

    Hi

In short no it will be no different as if the app doesnt work in Vista then its unlikely it will work in win7 beta as its not fully a Microsoft issue contrary to popular mythology, but its in teh hands of the 3rd party who developed the application if they dont program their application to work with the latest operating system.

Many 3rd parties wish you to buy their latest versions to work with current version Windows, some free applications may not work if their developer has decided to stop developing the app.

*to add something here and not directed at a single person but all, is that please understand what a beta is, its a test version of some new software and is likely to have bugs and issues with some software and hardware. A beta is issued to try and work out all or as many bugs as possible, but with something as large as an Operating System this cannot due to too many variables in hardware and software configurations to always work perfectly for all.

While it maybe great to run a new and latest version of Windows before many others, its exciting and can teach you alot about how windows works and get you a heads up on whats new and will be in the final version, too many people jump in unknowingly with this pre release software and when it doesnt work blame the software and the company......

Only really install on a PC that is not a main PC but a test one if you haev a spare as mentioned test software is likely to break.

Well said Halo. I have Vista on a desk top and a laptop, and was seriously thinking abut downloading the new beta, but decided against it. As much as I would love to have it and test it out, I need my computers for my schooling and couldn't afford to lose either one of them.
I do have a back up XP I could use for school, but as of right now, I have all my software on the Vista.
So, I am waiting, as hard as it is.

Ditto. I'm in the same boat as you, gal. I would love to download this and try it. Unfortunately, the only Vista computer I have is a new Vista.

You all are making me jealous. :(

Yup, good points Halo on betas! I've done this quite a bit over the last 3 years and there is no way I will ever let a beta take over my rig unless it was on a throw away install. I have an extra older AMD X2 rig that needs to be rebuilt, I guess I better get my butt in gear, besides there are no parts to buy, it just needs my TLC.:)

Yes agreed, I do have a spare laptop that I run it on and if I was to go to my desktop to run a test, I would first run an Image backup with Acronis True Image, its a perfect application for this type of thing as I store default basic installs and then image them for XP, Vista, Linux and now Win7 (for testing purposes), plus a Image of my main machine with all installed apps and tweaks, so I can in 30mins or so recover the Image and carry on if I decide to test any new OS on this PC.

Dual booting is another way to test software, as well as the aforementioned Virtual Machines (Virtual PC2007 is good).

Not saying earlier DONT test Windows7 just be prepared and understand what Beta means, it will work for many with some to little bugs, but it will also not work for others with many bugs found. IF your PC runs Vista already odds are on Windows 7 working ok, if you have older hardware with no Vista drivers then you will struggle.

Testing software is a personal choice, you are not forced to do it, so if it breaks then feedback the bug via the feedback icon and help fix the issue, or just uninstall and go back to previous Windows version and chalk the experience upto one of those things as all OSes be that Apple OSX, Linux have bugs and are not perfect.

    Just my $2 worth.

I looked on G4TV forum for info like you have posted here. Next time I will view both forums before I do something stupid like I just have by loading beta7 on my good computer. ugh......s--t
How do I SAFELY REMOVE all this Beta 7 garbage from my computer. My systems new performance dropped a whole point, my Spyware/AV won't turn on, programs open very slow, and just want the damned thing out of here.

Be careful not to download the updated version as I did. Now I can't uninstall it unless I do a complete recovery and start all over with Vista. If you do a clean installation you can remove the partions. So I was told.
I will wait until August when the stop the Beta and go live. Anyone have an idea on what MS will be the going price for Windows 7?

That is likely from users who have not got the specs to run Vista let alone Windows 7 or dont have sadly the knowledge to know what a beta is, favorite applications may or may not work, I have a few apps that dont work and one is a Microsoft app, but I bug filed and know that as part onf the managed beta test it will be addressed at some point even if it goes to external developer as one already has, I have contacts at one major application dev who I have spoken to, who will only release a compatible product once Windows 7 goes Final (RTM).

Worst thing about Microsoft issuing CTPs is that 80% of folk that download it think they are getting something free and that it will be 100% perfect, beta is not perfect and if your PC specs or knowledge of how to troubleshoot is not good then your in for a rough time and likey should not have tried a beta product of this scale.

The issue over "my Spyware/AV wont turn on" is not a Microsoft issue its due to the 3rd party developer not having a compatible product ready, many do not until the new OS goes RTM in test, due to developent costs as a beta could have 6 releases with differening code, then a few RCs and a RTM, so many dont bother updating their apps until RTM which is near final code.

Price not set as yet, debatable, but I have spoken to a few Microsoft folk I know on what I feel in this current climate they need to do in relation to pricing and licences, but that content is NDA.

You are absolutely right when it comes to novice users like myself. However, I enjoy challenges and this is a challenge.
I have the recovery discs for Vista and all the other programs, documents, and pictures on back up discs so when August comes around I can either put up the cash for it or do a complete recovery for Vista.
Your forum is great and enjoy the feed back and comments even if it is an e-mail lashing..
    Keep up the great work!

I totally agree with you it can be a challenge and a great learning experience as what better way to learn about how an OS works or doesn't in testing a new one, been how I learn much about the whole of the Microsoft Windows OS range.

The issue I have is in the "this is rubbish os" type comments, generally from users who just as mentioned dont have full knowledge of what betas and test software is, not their fault to some degree, but sadly no way to weed out the users who can download these versions of betas beforehand, so comments like that will happen, sadly they plagues Vista and Vista is not a bad OS, actually a very good one which is damm stable, Windows 7 is more stable now in its beta 7000 build than that of XP in SP1 IMHO, and I have tested all of them and XP was not great and was plagued like Vista with driver and compatibility issues until SP1 in which it became more accepted at that time by the general PC community. Now a days its heralded as one of the better MS Windows versions, but its had 7yrs to mature in, while many users to XP didn't use it in a migration from Win98/ME to XP to see its issues and incompatibilities.

You have your head screwed on right born2golf where testing and general PC usage is concerned as backups are crucial to daily PC usage.

But also remember only yo get the legitimate linked downloads from Microsoft CTPs as ones off p2p may house all sorts and not actually be the right build, as interim builds for devs maybe non certified for general use, was a few in the Vista beta that where leaked and caused much havok to users who downloaded those builds PCs.

Whats your honest opinion of Windows 7 at this point, what tools or features do you like and what dont you like?

I haven't spent too much time looking at all the in and outs of Windows 7 as I was trying to get out of jail with it.
All in all it the paint job looks great but the engine, hopefully, will get a tune up.
    1. My performance score was 1 point lower than with Vista.
    2. Programs and files opened slower
    3. My spyware and av are not recognized either in Control panel, security, and run security check of this computer. The little flag on taskbar(action center) verifies this. I ignore it as my own 3rd party is working in the background.
    4. Because the bells and whistles on the taskbar makes it new and different I like it.

Have till August to review more before I make the big decission.

I like the small recovery partition, lack of UAC interaction, expanded control panel usability. No cons yet except that it won't connect in VMWare, not W7's fault of course, and it will go *poof* in a few hours as I can't activate it. :-D

Nah, I gots a key when I dl'd it from MS, the problem with the beta is that I can't connect through VMWare though the 6801 leak was just fine in there. Probably a PEBKAC error.:-o:-D Thanks for the offer.:)

Ok guys here we go.I have my AMD 939 3600 box which will run Vista but has xp on it.I have Win 7 Beta burned from the iso and a key ready to install.Problem is no dvd player in that box just a cd and cdrw. The hdds are 2-36g 10k Raptors in raid 0 and 160g WDhd.I don`t want to pull my dvd player out of this box(I have to move alot of stuff to unstack the pcs and not much room. What if I was to get a portable dvd player from a friend? How could or would I be able to put the dvd in the portable and hook it to my 939 sys and do a Fresh install to the raptors.Think this might be a good test box for Win7.Its got a gig of Mushkin and I could take my 2 gigs out of pc3.Also has a Geforce 8400gs sli(256m)in it.Maybe someone has an answer or I could c&p this post and put it in hardware.Let me know peeps.

I spent a happy evening putting Win 7 on my son's Toshiba Satellite laptop this evening, as it is the only expendable machine in the household with the minimum requirements necessary for the intsall. It took about an hour.

The only problem I have discovered so far is that attempting to use, or to uninstall, SUPERAntispyware generates a BSOD every time. It plays nicely, however, with Avast!, which surprised me, Spybot S&D, and CCleaner. Haven't checked out Malwarebytes or Spyware Blaster yet.

Hehehe Bill, I didn't think that you were that adventurous. :-D :cool BTW, it looks like folding gives me the same PPD as Vista. Cool beans man.:) I'll be moving over completely to W7 in a few days and try and run it into the ground until it expires.;)

I have got it folding but not very successful so far, but the graphics on my laptop are pretty basic so i will have to see how thing go.

One problem that is recurring is that it goes into hibernation and will not come out without re-boot but i am working on it!

    Hi Bill

Neat, seems as if the basic network drivers installed at this point have caused some issues, hibernation is one of them as I have a filled bug on a BSOD I get while in hibernation/sleep... seems to be linked to the network driver. Alot of these issues should be ironed out by beta 2.

Try hibernation again and if it fails try the Feedback icon and file a bug on it for your PC as all hardware is different, the more bugs filed the more chance of this OS hitting the ground pretty well sorted.

Odd Bill, I have a couple of Win7 keys, and they are different from the ones you posted.

I have the Win7 on the D: partition of my laptop. Vista, on C:, can see and access the drive Win7 is on, but Win7 cannot 'see' the drive Vista, and my programs are on? Fun to play around with! :-D

    Hi Bill

Think many of them are what are given out and likely collected by a small number of people at that website, everyones will be differnet as IIRC each one allows 10 installs using same key, as many testers use multiple PCs, was same in Vista beta.

However from that site the words "Windows 7 pre-beta release" is a tell tale one as the keys for that where different to beta 1, TBH dont know if they would work with beta 1, not tried personally, but if they did they would pass the use by date in a few months time over end of July for beta 1.
