    Greetings All....
I'm having an issue with an HP laptop with win 7 home premium 64 bit. When I log on as the user, I can see the icon in the bottom right saying it has internet, but when I go to FF or IE they just bring up a browser that says it cannot connect. I can ping google, yahoo...etc.
I've done a DNS flush, disabled the card and installed a new driver.

Now here is where the fun starts. When I go in to safe mode w/networking, I can access the web.....So I figure it's either a driver or a setting that something has changed ....maybe a virus did it. I ran Malewarebytes and saw it had some trojans and other viruses which it removed.... I ran Malewarebytes several times after that and it found nothing.
I disabled IE 8 and tried just using FF...nope. I created a new acount with Admin rights...nope. There is no proxy server setting.

Any other suggestions? I need to get this laptop back to the user ASAP.

    Thanks !!

    Mike

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

    Greetings, shelpdoggSVT.

How are you accessing the Internet? You might try rebooting your modem or router - stranger things have happened.

I don't trust running only Malwareytes - you might consider going through the Malware Forum's Read & Run Me First thread to make sure that machine's squeaky clean.

    Hey Caliban....thanks for the response.
I had tried all of the malware removal processes except for the MGtools, which I did end up downloading and running. I only said MB's because usually that is the one that picks up the most infections.
All of them have been ran in the order specified. No infections.

I brought the laptop to work and have been working on it here for the last few days, so it's not network related. I can hook into the DMZ and bypass both firewalls for a clean connection. It even says it has internet access when you mouse over the icon in the system tray.....just won't display a page in IE or FF.

The UAC is still down...anything I should look for or try next?

    Thanks again,

    Mike

    Does this have everbody stumped?

If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them. THe only other option I have is to restore the laptop to its original state.....and I don't want to do that.

First .....it's not mine. Second....that's just giving up.

anyone? The machine has no viruses on it.

    Stumped, completely.

Can I offer a thread from another site that has several solutions, including one HP user who had to update drivers from the individual vendors and that worked?
Did a quick search, hope I'm not breaking a rule by linking another site.

I would quote it but there are several solutions on it and it's long. Some are basic, but some are pretty creative. http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-71955-ie-8-cannot-access-any-internet-web-pages

Hey Handygal....thanks.....I tried resetting the winsock catalog and some of the other options that were stated. All for not.....still does not display a web page ....in IE or FF.

It's crazy....I go into safe mode and can get to the internet no problem. I can even ping sites while in normal mode.

You said that you suspected a driver and that certainly sounds possible with it working in safe mode. Were you able to update any drivers?

I performed a clean boot with every service other than Microsoft disabled and that didn't help either. I uninstalled the NIC and updated that driver. That is the only one I've done.
updating every driver at this point is going to be too labor intensive.
I'm at the point where I'm just going to restore it because I've put in quite a few hours on this and I'm getting nowhere.

I really appreciate you taking the time to help!!!

I'm having the same trouble as Mike.

    Win 7 64 Home Prem

I can ping sites by name or IP address, however I can't access the internet via FF or IE 8. I can access the internet via browser while in Safe Mode.

Its not my system, its a family members system. When I first started working on it, I ran a MB scan and found a couple of infections which were removed. They believe it was infected with some "backup required" virus.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.
