Internet Explorer 8 has trouble opening and I cannot reset it as it says to close all programs first but they already are.
I tried disabling addons but there was no change.
    Any ideas?

MSIE8 is being fickle. This a.m. it opened fine and is functioning. I enabled all addons and still ok.
Thank you for the suggestion. It is allowing me to reset it which wil be my next step if this continues.

I use both F.F. and MSIE 8 and read at the Microsoft site that they conflict with each other, but I do not know about that..

Don't believe everything you read at Microsoft's website.

You can run more than one browser with no problem. I think I may have had 4 at one point. Now I mainly run FF and IE on each windows computer.

    Hi Peter

You still having this issue? if so boot into Safe Mode (F8 at boot) and try IE8, does it work ok, you could also try the Safe Mode IE version from within normal Windows 7, its located by clicking Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > IE no addons

Likely issues for IE crashing if it has not since install of Windows is a 3rd party addon, so could be Antivirus, a toolbar etc

Unfortunately, I am still having problems with MSIE 8.
It functions in that when i click on it, it will open. However, the boxes in the upper right are in reverse.A double box produces a large window while a single box produces a small window. It is backwards.
Firefox responds as it should while both explorers, 32 + 64 do not. I opend 32 in safe mode and it worked ok. I ran the windows tool that supposedly anayzes add ons and repairs them.I looked in the addon section and most are disabled while Adobe and Norton are enabled.
Because this is not a crisis, if someone has time, I would appreciate a suggestion.

    Hi Peter

I would disable them all and then restart IE and see if its ok, then if ok enable one of them say Adobe and restart IE and see if its OK if it is disable it and enable Norton and restart IE and test, if OK then continue with any others till you find a cause.

If Adobe or Norton are not ok on their own tell us which one as you may need to uninstall and get the lastest version of Adobe (dont know what add-on its is so if the add-ons page in IE gives you a clue, then let us know as if its Flash their is a dedicated uninstaller for that HERE) if Norton then unsinstall run the Norton Removeal Tool HERE, then run CCleaner and its Cleaner and Registry cleaner (the registry one run until nothing lists for removal) then reboot and re-install Norton

Latest version of Flash HERE (bare in mind Flash content in Webpages only work in 32bit IE and not 64bit yet!)

I went to 'manage addons' and there were none there.
Is this because I reset the explorer?
I also do not have Explorer 32 per se, in startup, just the icon. There is Explorer 64 in writing but not Explorer 32.
When I open explorer, it is a half page. I have tried stretching then holding ctrl + shift while I click 'exit' to no avail.
Only the double box will give the full page.

I ran an image recovery with Acronis and updated everything.
All seems to run well so far.
I tried a system restore for two dates but got the error message that is was not successful -0xc0000022.
If you remember I received this machine with system restore turned off and then moved the button to restore all. I also moved the slider to obatin room for points.
Thank you for the continued support.

I made an error in reporting that all was well as the boxes are still interchanged.
I disabled all addons and the problem persists.
Is functionally ok to keep it this way or does this indicate a problem?

    Hi Peter

Could you post a screenshot or attach one with the screen of IE and the messed up boxes so I can see whats happening?

Do you have the Win7 DVD? if so I would try from an elevated CMD prompt (type CMD into the Start Search box and then right click CMD and choose Run as Administrator) and type sfc /scannow and hit enter and hopefully it should repair your Windows install and IE is part of that, if it doesnt let us know and maybe we can repair install IE8.

So IE8 still works ok in its Safe Mode?

Yes their is some issue as this is not sounding normal, dunno what it is a yet, its likely a 3rd party application so try this and boot into Safe Mode (F8 at boot and choose Safe Mode with Networking) and then see if IE8 is ok in this mode.

I would also ask Peter if possible if you could post a list of your startups, and this can be done from Ccleaner and its Tools > Startup menu and then click the Save to Text File button in the bottom right corner and then attach as per HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post

As the cause maybe a 3rd party app.

    >>When I click on the Explorer, the screen opens in a half screen when the box is single and a full screen when there are two boxes. It is the opposite of what it should be. However, in safe mode, the screen stays the same size whether two boxes or one.

Regarding dvds, I have two I made which Dell said to create for a recovery and I have the original o.s cd. If I use the latter I will lose all my programs. Which dvd or cd are you advising me to use for sfc /scannow?

I hope my startup attachment is ok!

    Hi Peter

It will be the original OS CD to use for SFC /Scannow

Couldnt still post a screenshot of the anomalie? pictures are sometimes good for me to get the gist over text explaination as terms/phrases maybe different to you and me.

As for your startups wow you have alot, but whats your antivirus app as its not listed as far as I can see?

If you want we can slim down your list a bit, its not the question you asked originally but it may help your PCs smooth running? just ask and I or We can advise on what to loose in that list.

    Noteables are

    Adobe Speed Launcher
RtHDVCpl (Relatek audio Control Panel .... can be found in Control Panel of Windows)
THX Audio Control Panel (can get to this from your Control Panel Audio settings)
    QuickTime Task
OneNote 2010 Screen Clipper and Launcher.lnk (depens if you use OneNote alot)

Others can be disabled as well, depends if you use the hardware or software they link to alot or from boot, like scanner etc

Here is a screen shot of the large box with a small window.
I have the Norton security Suite ;it is free to Comcast customers.
I ran disk check and a full virus scan and both are ok.
Btw, Firefox hs a problem in that the window stays full whether i click on the large or double box -ithe screen just jumps.
I will try sfc with the os disc.

I right clicked the icons for both the Explorer and FireFox, selected properties and kept clicking the normal window with the other selections and now the squares are behaving. Thank you for the help and I'll take you up on the start menu items; you mentioned I had an inordinate amount.
