I would try to delete any pending.xml* files in the C:\windows\winsxs directory. You may find out that you have to brute force delete them using Unlocker or something similar to it. Reboot your PC, and try updating again.

I found one pending XML in the location you listed. I axed it with File Assassin from within MBAM . I then tried the update again, this time I got a CMD window performing some sort of flushing routine, and the update failed again .
This one's got me snakebit .

I tried the microsft fix it first, the normal version, followed instructions, did not work. I then re-tried, and, according to instructions, ticked the "aggresive" box . When I strated the download for the (12th?) time, I got several CMD window processes (another flush of some sort and another operation as well) and this time the download restarted (instead of restarting at the installation part) and after 20 or so minutes SUCCESS !! FINALLY ITS DONE !!
    THISISU FOR THE WIN ! ! ! !

Thanks a ton, man ! I thought I'd never get this done !

Hmmm. My update history is almost empty now, except for the updates performed AFTER the process that allowed me to install SP1 . I know the updates are not GONE, only the update history, accessed through the check for updates window, is empty. Does this really matter ?

Basic answer, no it doesn't matter.

All the updates you had installed prior to installing SP1 are actually apart of SP1. Considered it one big Windows update file with ~903MB worth of updates.

    I hope this makes sense.

I am in the same boat. I will be looking forward to seeing the responses you get. Ok, I see I just didn't scroll far enough to see answers. Gonna try isthisu's solution.

Of course it makes sense. Now when I'm setting up somebody's computer, I can get ~100 separate updates in one fell swoop, making my life much easier, and work faster.
Perfect. Thanks again for your help .
