With it being an "older" machine, you may want to try Vista. I've got an "older" Dell that I tried Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1 on. The problem with 7 and 8 is finding device drivers compatible with those OSes. Win 8.1 will offer to run devices in "compatibility mode". With Vista, all but 2 of my devices were automatically configured during OS installation. For the 2 that weren't automatically configured, my XP drivers work for.

    Hi

I agree with mdonah and driver are the pitfall with swapping up a Windows version, you maybe very lucky as many drivers for XP models did have updates to work for Vista and 7, many Vista drivers work with 7, some need to be found manually and in some instances, run in compatibility mode to work.

But I would run the Windows 7 upgrade advisor and check your PC and software for issues.
