I have an old Compaq Deskpro running Win'98 se, and the defrag never ends.
It does defrag for a while, then a message comes up saying "Drive's contents changed: restarting", whereupon it proceeds to do so. What could be causing this? And more to the point, is there a free defrag program I can download?

Just did a search and found a free defrag which works for Win 98.
However I am wondering what may be causing the one on my computer to misbehave.....? Any ideas, folks?

You have programs (????screensaver) running in the background. use the task manager (ctrl+alt+del once) to clear these, stop screensavers, set all power saving/ turn of options to never. Better use safe mode. Also empty recycle bin , temp files, internet cache etc before you start.
