I have the CD of the Microsoft Money 98 that came with my old computer I bought on 1998 that has Win 98. I now have a new Dell with Win XP. Would it screw anything up to load that program onto the new machine?

Money98 is no longer supported, so why load it.

I use it for basic checkbook registry, no support needed

It will not screw it up, but since it is a older program, it may not run correctly on XP. If you have Excel, or Works that came with the new computer, I would use it instead. Also there is Openoffice if you do not have Excel.

is there already a built in template, if you will, for checkbook registry in excel, complete with ability to balance when statement is received?

ok, I have downloaded and reviewed the checkbook .xls document provided in previous post. Looks neat, but a couple questions.
How do you reconcile your checkbook when your statement comes?
Is there a way to automate entry of transactions that occur regularly?
    Thanks.

You would have to create a macro to do the automate. As for Reconcile, I imagine with some programming with the worksheet, you can do it by creating a new worksheet that would be the reconciled.
