well, amazingly, win 98 came up upon reboot. kids have been using it.

i think i'm just going to let it ride out its 'last days' till it dies.

meanwhile, i'll be watching ads and asking questions about my new computer!!!

    Good to hear!

    Actually...
What usually goes first is the disk drive.
All you really have to do is replace that...
    reinstall 98SE...
    HD only $40 to $60 retail. ;)

Unless it's so old that playing Solitaire on the thing challenges it.

isnt that the $6 mil question..... or maybe just a $60 question...

    dare i replace the HD...

its had many problems that we've just willingly worked around.

one that was just brought to my attention today is the BSafe virus scan has not run successfully in ages. trying to get a version of MSN msgr downloaded, i also ran several free online scanners that could not run all the way.

so is it only the harddrive?? or are there more problems lurking behind the scenes.....

Problems lurking ....probably ....bothers me that you cant run the online scans ....plus the whole start up issue ....are you willing to do some more testing stuff?

You saw my directions for a defrag in safe mode ....would try that first ..see how it does.

If that goes well...still in safe mode:
Clean up your hard disk drive with ScanDisk
Through normal use of your computer, your hard disk drive can become cluttered and a bit messy. And folders can become cross-linked, file names can contain invalid or unknown characters or become damaged, and file names can become disassociated with their files. ScanDisk can fix these and other problems for you. It's also a good idea to run ScanDisk on a regular basis: once a week for Standard, and once a month for Thorough.

    Here's how to use ScanDisk:

    Click the Start button.
Point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click ScanDisk.
Click the drive you want to scan, and choose either the Standard or Thorough test.
    Click Start.

The Standard test checks the files and folders on the selected drives for errors.
The Thorough test will give you further options. It performs the Standard test plus checks your hard disk drive for physical damage. You can even specify to scan areas of your disk containing only data files, or just the areas with system files, or both.
Both Standard and Thorough have a set of Advanced options that help you to deal with lost file fragments, invalid files, and files that overlap the same disk space. You can also choose to keep a log file of what ScanDisk finds.

i can give the defrag a chance.

but remember we dumped the scandisk from running as it was taking 3 days.

oy. just as i've rebooted and gotten defrag to run, i remembered that my computer friend had told me to 'stop' certain things from running... but i dont remember what they were/are!!

i know i've still got the screen saver shut off. i did turn Bsafe back on...

oh. update. we're just told defrag cant/wont work because of errors on the hard drive...

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

I know ....but you didn't do the defrag first ....the other option is to download to floppy the hard drive manufacturers diagnostic tools and boot into that ....what is the drive?

The screen saver will usually interfere with the defrag ....just watch for it restarting constantly ...then are you in safe mode doing this?

  9. karenl

so i need to know the MFG of the drive?

  10. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Well, yes ....two ways to do it ...physically take it out to look at it ...bummer ...or download Everest and run it ...it will tell you ...other poss. is to boot into the bios ...should also tell you (but might not) ...
    Everest:

so just opening up the case wont reveal its hidden secrets?

defrag wouldnt run; it wanted me to scandisk first. so i'm running SD on C drive now. its about 60% complete. i'll be able to defrag C drive after that (so i'm assuming), but it'll hang up big time on the D drive. that is the drive that was 85% scanned for about 2 days and started this latest fiasco.

should i stop this scan and do the download (i really dont want to take compy parts apart...) of everest?

  12. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Don't stop the scan .....do the download later when you aren't running anything ...I've slept ...is the D drive a partition on the hard drive or a seperate hard drive? Must be a partition ...what's on it?

  13. karenl

    karenl Private First Class

    D drive is partition.

'everything' is on the D drive. i've tried to keep the C drive for the OS (altho i know there is some stuff on it).

so the majority of pgms are on the D drive.

Have you tried using diskkeeper lite for defragging?

  15. karenl

    karenl Private First Class

    eh, what?

and i just got a window saying defrag had to start over 10 times cuz windows was trying to work, or something like that... i saw i had Windows open, so i closed it. blarg. what a knothead...

  17. karenl

    karenl Private First Class

    yes, i'm in safe mode.

can i still stop pgms running while its defragging?

are you suggesting i check out that link? and possibly download it??

  18. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Haven't tried stopping programs while it is running ...but isn't there an option to pause? Then maybe stop processes/programs ...then resume ...yes...diskeeper lite is usually faster than the MS defragger ...click on details(?) if you want to watch the process as it is defragging ...that way you can see if it hangs.

  19. karenl

    karenl Private First Class

no pause option. i've been watching it run for a while (the 'old' way) and it might be hung up on something else as its been on the same number for quite a while...

i assume i'll have to stop all that to get online on the win 98 compy to download this?

can i stay in safe mode or do i need to get out of that to get online?

i guess if defrag continues to be hung up on this particular file, i'll just stop the whole thing and start over.

oh. ya... i remember. i wasnt able to stop/end most of those pgms... i get kept getting errors and the system would freeze and i'd have to reboot so i gave up on ending pgms... blarg. what a mess. is it christmas yet???

  20. karenl

    karenl Private First Class

well. compy solved the problem... got the blue screen of death.

so, i'll check out the defrag link and go from there...

What was the BSOD code error? It's important ....unless you've already gone for the hammer ...

  22. karenl

    karenl Private First Class

    hammer very tempting...

    OD 0167:BFF91B9D

had to reboot. got boot failure. restarting again

code would be a 0x ........fingers crossed ....unplug ethernet and usb devices

  24. karenl

    karenl Private First Class

unplug what??? isnt ethernet what connects it to the internet? and USB? anything that is connected via USB??

PS - got the defrag lite installed. it wants me to reboot...

will wait till i hear back from you

  25. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

ethernet is the cable that goes to the router/modem ....could cause a start up issue ....usb devices...like a mouse or a keyboard that does not connect to the ps/2 plug ins ...or a flash drive (portable drive) ...or a printer that plugs in via usb ....go ahead and reboot then and see if it comes up ...next time you get a BSOD ...there will be a long string of error code ...try to write it all down ....0x00000d2(XXXXXXX)(xxxxxxx)(nnnnnn)(hhhhhhh)...like that.

  26. karenl

    karenl Private First Class

ok. only USB and ethernet. got it.

how 'bout if i just copy what you wrote and give that back to you? LOL.. ok. JK... actually, i dont recall seeing all those characters, but you're way computer-smart than i am, so i'll watch for it.

    and now - i'll get on w/it...

OH! do i want to run this new defrag lite in safe mode?

PS - its rebooted ok, but its not in safe mode

  27. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

You can run it in normal mode ....there should be an option to do either of the partitions ...would start with the c ...if that goes ok ...do the d ...

  28. karenl

    karenl Private First Class

    i'm on it!!

    have i thanked you lately??

    thank you, lately!!

    Running or done? Both drives?

  30. karenl

    karenl Private First Class

it doesnt look like i can choose both drives, so defragging C drive right now.

its at 60% complete. and, boy, does that screen look complicated!!! i shore hope i didnt have to read anything before using it, lol!!!

  31. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

No...it's very straight forward ....after the analysis ...option to defrag .yes..even if it says it's not necc. to defrag, can still do it anyway ..

does it not show both of the partitions ...and yes, you can only do one at a time ....

  32. karenl

    karenl Private First Class

    C drive has defragged ok.

    defragging D now.

  33. karenl

    karenl Private First Class

    "After analysis"??? oops!

    i just clicked defrag.

    blarg.

    back to the drawing board...

we'll see how D drive goes...

  34. karenl

    karenl Private First Class

defrag is done on D drive. can that be possible???

if so, what do i do now?

  35. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Use it and see how it runs before we do anythings else to it .....have you done the malware on the xp machine for the disconnects?

  36. karenl

    karenl Private First Class

    *blushing* no.

trying to solve problems on 2 compies at once overwhelmed me.

i go back and reread what you said 'bout malware and see if i can tackle it.

my prob is - my kids will be home from work soon and will want to use compy

and THEIR cousins will be here shortly

    and

    and

    and

(have i made enough excuses yet???)
