Returning after a virus fix 6 mths ago, new problem as follows:

Having carefully gone thru READ ME FIRST procedures, three virus files were found, 2 as per attachment derived using BitDefender. Spybot picked up an Alexa related file & removed.

Ops system problems are (1) Win Autoupdates icon continues on reboot after updating; (2) Ops sys deleted all printer drivers yesterday, the they strangely returned; (3) On reboot sys kept telling me program error smc.exe generating errors.

READ ME problems were Win Defender refuses to run (in normal & safe mode). Is there another version for Win2k professional?

Can you please attach the logs from the panda scan and hijack this? Thanks!:)

As for Defender, no there isn't another version. You'll just skip that step.

Thanks, in process of running Pandascan Avast picked up a virus win32 type attached to that scan and caused me to abort. I will run Hijack this instead.

Attached is the resulting Hijackthis file, obtained in normal mode. Grateful any comment.

Avast should not have been running in safe mode. Panda, like any other AV software needs to load signature files in order to find the malicious files on your computer and often other AV software will see this as a threat. These files are perfectly safe.

From the READ AND RUN ME FIRST:

6: Online Virus And Trojan Scanning

Please run the below two online scanning tools and make sure you save and attach the logs later to any request for help that you post. From step 5 you should already be in safe mode but you will need to reconnect your cable now and possibly reboot and choose Safe Mode with Networking Support.

Thanks, correct procedure yielded various malicious items, plus extra, updated ad-aware in safemode also produced more. Attached please find the final Panda and latest Hijackthis before returning to this message.

Is further action necessary on the HJ file?

You did not install HJT as requested in step 7 of the READ ME. In fact you installed it exactly where we request it not be installed. Also, HJT logs must be obtained in normal boot mode. This is all in step 7's instructions. Also the below two processes should not be running when using HJT:
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
    C:\PROGRA~1\WINZIP\winzip32.exe

Please install HJT properly for possible future use. Right now there is nothing in your HJT log to be concerned with. Are you having malware problems? None of what you posted in message one sounds like anything to do with malware.

Windows Defender should work on Windows 2000!

Thanks for clarification, just an old timer gets a bit confused sometimes. Only Win autoupdates still not working as keeps returning with icon bottom left. Will re-check other postings re this and fix up hjt location.

I would suggest you post a new message in the Software Forum and clearly and in more detail explain your problems with Windows Updates. Also indicate whether you can actually download and install updates.

If you are still having problems with smc.exe (which is Sygate firewall), uninstall it, reboot, and then reinstall and see if it helps.

As I said below, none of the issues you are describing seem to be malware topics.
