win bloat

So..
I upgrade a Win98 SE installation to bring it up to date (except for IE6, MS ,NET, and something else).

80 MB disappeared off the HD.

I cleaned up the disk with a coupla windwos cleaners, but didn't get back much.
I figured that Win backed up anythign it replaced somewhere.
I checked a bunch of the usual suspect directories (sysbckup, etc), but didn't find anything that amounted to much.
So... where should I look to get back the space?

PS: all the updates were security related, and other odds and ends.

temp gets deleted on every reboot, as in 'deltree \temp'

Still looking, for where the 80MB went, although I did find a bunch of old stuff that didn't get removed. Amazing what detritus you can find on a HD.

 

OK, found some mouse turds left by the updates

the updates created a new one, common~2
48 mb of duplicate (or new versions) of files
That, plus a pass with window washer (webroot S/W), which deleted a LOT of files with strange names (looked like lotsa line noise ;-)got back 28MB.

Result: the updates only REALLY took up <~20MB (which is ridiculous for a bunch of security updates and minor releases).

This illustrates one of my pet peeves of MS S/W:
Just like the small, immature, child that it is, it never cleans up after itself ;-).
