    Hi,

Windows ME, 128M Ram, P4 processor.

When booting the system, the Windows ME screen sits there for a while (about 5 mins.) before continuing to boot.

Once booted, the machine runs well. I did online scans in normal mode because I can't get into safe mode with networking (the option does not exist on this system).

Safe mode boot gets past the ME screen quickly. Normal mode does not.
No viruses appear, no spyware, adware. I didn't see anything strange in HJT.

Any clue why it takes so long to pass the ME screen?

WinMe can be quite slow loading. Also if you are load antivirus, spyware detection/blocking, and firewall applications, it takes time to set them up and configure them.

If you have no malware problems and are just experiencing slow bootups, you may want to address this problem in the software forum. If you suspect the problem is a malware related issue you should follow all the steps below.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus RemovalMake sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

    Thanks for responding, Chaslang.

Unless this is a boot virus of some sort, I don't think it is a problem for this forum. I posted it to the software forum but no response.

It only happens when I load all drivers using the step by step confirmation in ME boot.

In the bootlog.txt file the following drivers fail to load:

    [0007182E] LoadFailed = C:\WINDOWS\system\VMM32\vshare.VXD
[00071870] Dynamic load failed : [00071870] File not found

If I don't load all windows drivers, I don't experience the problem.

Again, I ran the suggestions in the post for spyware, and I found nothing. I ran HJT and the log didn't produce anything out of the ordinary.

Yes it is not a malware issue however it is possible it was caused by malware.

Did you look for the file: C:\WINDOWS\system\VMM32\vshare.vxd

Check to see if you can find it on your system. If not you will need to get a copy from your Windows ME CD and copy it back to the above folder. It possible that it is located inside one of the .CAB files.
