    Hi guys.

Sorry, but I don't know if this has been answered before as the search engine is not working... so here it goes !!!

I am having problems with my Windows media player v.9. It has been working fine until now suddently it crashes everytime I try to stream some online content. I don't remember doing anything that could affect the mediaplayer.

    I get following messages:
"Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

    ... and more information:
    "AppName: wmplayer.exe AppVer: 9.0.0.2980 ModName: wininet.dll
    ModVer: 6.0.2800.1405 Offset: 0006aab6"

I've tried to uninstall and reinstall the mediaplayer, downloaded all patches and updates and bugfixes i could find at microsofts download center...(I think)...and even tried to install the v.10 Beta mediaplayer but nothing helps.

Is there anybody that can help me out with my problem ???

Try streaming not just one thing. Like try doing different things. It may be that one song. Also make sure that it is able to load the songs advertisement page that comes up when you connect to play a song.

    Hey thanks for the reponse....
Well it is not the song or the video I want to stream.....
And the player can show the advertisement page... but it cannot play any video/audio from the ad page.

and it is not the network... because other computers here can stream but I can't so something is wrong with my computer / media player.

oh so you are trying to get the file from a website or link right? i thought you meant you were trying to get it through the windows media player guide in windows media player. if your diong that make sure your using IE jsut for starters. Then make sure you click on Tools-Options-Advanced and check the boxes that say "Play video in web pages" and "Play sounds in web pages".

I have had exactly the same problems. When I try to load anything Windows Media related that is online from any browser (or from the media guide page on WMP 9) it crashes. No error report - it just disappears. I have done everything to remedy this. I have reinstalled WMP9. I have changed all my security settings. I have gone to all the WMP help pages and still nothing really deals specifically with what I am having problems with. It was working three days ago and for some reason it has stopped.I can play anything off my HD fine, but nothing over the web.

I am at wits end - condsidering I use WM a fair to to listen to online streaming. I have posted on the microsoft newsgroup and they seem to ignore anything that is half tricky and answer all the melon heads who can't be bothered looking up the support on the microsoft website.

Its almost like there is a permissions problem - except I can't find anything in my internet options that I haven't already changed....

    Any thoughts??

another thing to check is if you have a firewall turn it off and use WMP to get to the streaming media.. if it works... delete WMP from the Programs List of your firewall, use WMP again and let the firewall pick it up again and remember to click allow access.

Thanks for your help tho :(

I started having this problem out of the blue too and have been looking everywhere for the answer...and I found it:

There is a bug in Media Player that, for whatever reason, makes it quit being able to determine your connection speed for streaming video. When it cannot determine the speed, it crashes.

There is a manual bandwidth selection feature now available in Windows Media Player 7.1 and Microsoft Windows Media Player for Windows XP that allows you to specify it yourself (this feature was added specifically to address this issue). Specify your connection speed and you should be able to view streaming media again ("Tools/Options").

For anyone with older versions, follow these instructions to edit the registry: http://www.kbalertz.com/Feedback_253798.aspx

I have the same problem too!

How do you determine what your connection speed is?

    Im on AOL broadband

Also what have you set your buffering to?

Ive just tried to use RealPlayer, I made it play all windows media files, and now im getting the same error with that in Internet Explorer.

    Wininet.dll

Please ignore my last post, it was a temporary fix. What you need to do is delete the file MMSwitch.ax in the windows or windows/system32 directory and reboot.

    Thanks for the reply.

But thats a plug-in, and I dont have that plug-in.

I get the same error message as the person at the start of the thread (wininet.dll)

Although this isnt the same problem, he gets the same error message Here

I dont suppose any of you are members of that site and can see the solution?

Tried that. Still nothing. I couldnt delete index.dat though, said it was in use.

    Thanks for your input.

    Index.dat is deleted and re-created on re-boot.

just something else to check open WMP and click Tools > Options > Network and make sure Mulitcast UDP TCP & HTTP are all ticked.

then click Performance and manually choose your connection speed and click Apply.

  19. eljulz

    eljulz Private E-2

Ok they were all ticked, and set my connection but it still exited.

sorry I have no other thoughts apart from the ones I have posted above...

what is the link to the media you are trying to play? did you try the streaming music site I posted earlier to see if that works?

possible that with SP2 due out soon that installing that may fix your problem as WMP9 is updated to version 9.00.00.3250

Its any streamed media. Would it be worth downloading another copy of wininet.dll or could this damage my computer.

pop your XP cd in the drive and click Start > Run and type > scannow /sfc > ok and it will hopefully replace the damaged system file.

Would help if I concentrated a bit more and didnt type backwards... its a talent I have for reading backwards!!!

the bold bit should read sfc /scannow

another question I know its streaming media that you cannot play... but can you play all other media files ok .... MP3, ASF, MPG etc etc?

  25. eljulz

    eljulz Private E-2

Unfortunately I dont have the XP cd, its not my computer, but I can download the DLL from dlls.com or something.

    Yes other files play fine.

    Is downloading the dll risky?

  26. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

downloading is not risky BUT installing it can be as WFP may or will attempt to restore the file back.... as I said earlier that DLL is updated in SP2, I would be really tempted to install SP2 as it updates not only that DLL but WMP9.

what firewall program do you use and have you disabled it to see if you can connect? ( cannot remember asking you this as your thread was hijacked twice! )

  27. eljulz

    eljulz Private E-2

I dont think I have a file wall, I just have Norton antivirus 02004 running, disabling that doesnt help.

    What is SP2?

    Thanks again for your help.

its Windows XP Service Pack 2 ... just keep a lookout for it on windows update or you could download the network install pack 270+mb tho!

link to SP2 network install ( ps you dont need a network to install.. I have used this one on a single XP pc )
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=39326

I would backup your important data/info when installing any big update.... as some oldish software can have issues with newer updates.

    hey no problems...

from whats been reported earlier on MG by Goldfish and Iceman is that windows update is showing SP2 available... be warned tho some users are having mixed results when installed.. some apps dont work and some have had BSODs at reboot.

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=39436

as I said earlier... do backup anything important before installing adn I hope this resolves your problem.

Im not even sure if I have SP1 installed, but I download updates everytime I get a notice so I guess it would be installed. Is there a way to check this?

Also is there a way to continue to get Windows updates without getting SP2?

Because people are having problems with it.

  32. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

to check if you have SP1.. right click my computer > properties and under the system heading it will tell you if you have service pack 1

yes a few ways if you have Auto Update turned on then change it to Notify but dont download or install or use this http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=413314&postcount=70

as for problems with SP2.... you will always read mixed views, for me and others it installed with no problems for others it not worked, at present there are no simple answers as to why apart from the fact we all have different hardware and software installed and any update will have issues with something... DivX5.2 is one app thats not playing happy with SP2 ..... but what I will say is that if you have all your software upto date and have a virus/spyware free pc then you are 90% of the way there..... I would if your not too sure about installing SP2 wait a few weeks until the dust settles and most of the failing apps have been identified.

I did also read on a MS techs blog that SP2 didnt work on some of the internal websites at MS until updates were done ;)
