I have windows XP PRO. I have dial up (Netscape) service. I downloaded a free antivirus (Avast4.7) and I think it deleted a system file, I am not sure. I connect to internet and after few seconds computer restarts. The reason appear on the screan it says that “windows cannot log on” or something like that. I tried to restore the system to a previous state but I cannot do it because there is only one moment back available and this is after the changes took place.( I mean antivirus scanning). Is there a file I can download from internet ( on another pc) to make my other computer stay connected on internet? Do you know what could have happened? Or is there a setting might a virus have changed and I can redo it?
    Thank you

If you are getting disconnected on dial-up, then possible that something is wrong with your line. As for Avast, where did you download it from? Avast will not delete a system file, unless viri had attached itself to it.

Hi Brownizs. This computer used to work on dial up ok. the line is ok , too. this other computer I am writing to you is connected on the same line. the other computer connects and afterc few seconds restarts. this happen after the avast cleaned some of the " infected" files...I remember at scaning some of the files were located in " windows" and I was asked if I am sure I want to delet those files..and I said yes...I did not paid a lot of attention at that time..
I downloded the program from "itsfree4you.com"....it is just a supposition that a system file was deleted..I am not sure...part of the error answer before the computer shuts down was saying something that " win logon..."cannot be done...therefore the computer stays connected just few seconds. i tried to restore the system to a previous point but srtange...there is only on restore point available and that is after the scanning took place..therefore useless...do you know a sofware I can download to check that system and see what is corrrupted or missing?
    thank you for your time

I did a whois on itsfreeforyou.com and the site seems to be a scam. The contact info is fake and the host is proredirect.com which doesn't seem like a legit source. I would suggest taking off that installation you have and reinstalling an antivirus you received from a trusted source and see if it detects whatever is on your computer. If that doesn't solve your problem you may have to format...

Only download files from legit sources. itsfreeforyou.com currently isn't up anymore.

Thank you. I'll see what I can do. what's done is done.I am thinking if there is a program that would scan my computer to see majjor errors or important files missing and that would be essential for the system to work.do you know any?

Your Windows XP CD. Set your computer to boot from CD and windows has a utility to do just what you're looking for. Doing so could create conflict with current installed programs though.

You can get Avast and other great programs from here at MajorGeeks. As for restore, the best solution would be to either use your license, and someone lend you a XP disk to fix the machine, or go out and purchase the Full version of XP so that you have a copy for your own use.
