win xp back up and restore .bkf

    I installed the above from the o.s. disc and it seems to work except I cannot open the extension .BKf
    I cannot insert a different one and M.S. says any extension will do.
    What do they mean by that.
    All I want to do is backup and restoreAND beable to open the extension .bkf
