    Hi,

I´ve just purchased a HP Pavilion a6552.sc. The computer included Windows Vista but I just totally hated it. I had a friend reinstalling my old Windows XP 32-bit for me. But now I have a huge problem. All the drivers on Hp´s homepage are for Win Vista. So the computer doesn´t work so well and I can´t play games on higher resolution than 1024x768. :cry

Can anyone please help me find all requierd drivers for a HP Pavilion a6552.sc?:wave
Here follows a link for detailed information about the computer; http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...4009&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

    I will try to sum it all up thou;

    Base processor
    Phenom-9550 (A) 2.2 GHz (95W)
    2000 MHz HyperTransport 1.0
    Socket 775

    Chipset

    Manufacturer: ECS
    Motherboard Name: MCP61PM-HM
    HP/Compaq motherboard name: Nettle3-GL8E

    Video Graphics
    AMD Radeon HD3650
    512 MB DDR2 memory
    I/O Ports: HDMI, VGA, DVI-I (dual-link)

    Sound/Audio
    High Definition 8-channel audio
    ALC 888S chipset

    Network (LAN)
    Integrated 10/100 Base-T networking interface

    and finally

    16X DVD(+/-)R/RW 12X RAM (+/-)R DL LightScribe SATA drive

Oh, and one last thing... Is it possible to have DirectX 10 on XP? I´ve googled it and it seems to work but wich version is the most stable? :-o

I would be so glad if anyone could help me!
    You´d be my her0!

    Hugs, Bekka

:wave Welcome to Major Geeks! :major

First: as far as I know, there is no official Microsoft support for DX10 in Windows XP. There's plenty of 'unofficial' DX10 mods and tweaks and patches, but 'unofficial' also means 'no place to turn when the :crap hits the fan'. Be careful. Be sure to set restore points.

Second: your drivers are actually pretty easy to find if you know where to look....
WinXP Chipset Drivers (includes SMBus, ethernet, and others)
    Audio Drivers for WinXP
Video Drivers for WinXP (for the Radeon HD3850 video card)

If you're using SP2, you'll need to install KB888111 before you install your sound drivers. It's the Microsoft hi-def audio update (also known as the "UAA Update"). If you're running SP3, you'll probably have to "trick" SP3 in to thinking that it's SP2 by using the steps in this thread before installing KB888111 (and before installing your audio drivers). If there's anything else we can do, or you run in to problems, just let us know!!!

And thank you very much! I´ll be running around from now on! :D

    Wow! That went fast!

Was it the arse kissing part? :)

Thank you very much! You´re really a pro!

May I ask about the processor?
its a 9550+.. Does it means that it has 9550 mhz? :)

and btw; I read another thread now about the mothercard; http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1246327

It was the same drivers for that computer too... Cool...

but he had a extra; http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_178.24_whql.html <---- what is that for? :)

Darn, just installed all updates and tried to play Need For speed undercover on highest graphicsettings and on a resolution of 1920 x 1080... Didn´t work well at all = (

    Can only play on 1024 x 768...

Darn, if it´s not the drivers... What can it be? =S

    Hi

No your CPU is 2.2ghz in speed the 9550 is a model version code, black is model and blue is speed of CPU from your specs, the (95W) is power consumption of CPU.
    Phenom-9550 (A) 2.2 GHz (95W)

Dont install that as its for a different make of Graphics card than you have as you have an ATi Radeon card.

By didnt work well at all on high setting what exactly was issue? not upto speed on NFS Undercover but its max screen resolution maybe 1024x768 to run smoothly.

Nope, it isn't 9550mhz. That would be GREAT if it was, and would be the fastest CPU on the planet. The 9550 is just an arbitrary model number. Here's a small quote from the AMD web site: "AMD Phenom™ X4 9550 processor – 2.2 GHz". The "X4" means it's a quad-core processor.
That driver is for the on-board video, but you said you had the Radeon HD3850 video, so you didn't need that driver.
Hmmmm..... go in to the Device Manager (Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager) and take a look at what's listed under "Display Adapters". If you see any yellow question marks ? or exclamation points ! or any red X's under Display Adapters (or anywhere else), please post exactly what is listed and where. Another quick check to see what display/video adapter is installed is to right click on an empty space on your desktop, select 'Properties', click the 'Settings' tab, click the 'Advanced' button, and click the 'Adapter' tab. It should say "ATI Radeon HD3850" in the 'Adapter Type' box. I'm assuming you restarted the PC after each driver install as you were prompted to. If you didn't, the drivers may not be installed completely or correctly. Also, if you installed any games before the video driver was installed, the may have configured themselves for the 'generic' video driver; when the correct video driver was installed, the game didn't 'switch over'. Try uninstalling the game, restart the PC, and reload the game.

Hi guys; Thank you so much for your time and effort!

To Halo (and partly an answer to dlb
Well, each Core works on 2.2 Ghz? then the total speed of the computer should be 2.2 ghz x 4 = 8.8 ghz? RIght?

It seems to lag only when I turn antialiasing & Co on. When they´re off I can run 1920x1080i... It´s superstrange I think.

Oh, I see.. I´ve installed the radeon drivers :)

And that´s the whole reason for why I bought a new computer! hehe, to be able to play with fullhd since my screen is a fullhd 40" :)

    dlb
    I see...

Well, the only place where there´s an yellow question marks is for the sounddriver. But it works well so I´ll just ignore it for now. I think I eventually have to go for Win XP 64-bit anyways. Maybe the games will work better on 64 bit?

And yes, the ATI Radeon HD3650 sure is installed with the latest drivers. Well, the games were installed after the ATI Radeon HD3650 drivers but before the chipset and motherboard drivers... I´m just thinking that maybe I should have my friend reformat everything and install Win XP 64 bit and install the drivers first and then try on the games again... But that sure is a lots of work..

If only it was like that, but not far off, end speed is not 8.8ghz but you do have theroetically that processing power, if majority of software could use parallel computing which multi-core CPUs basically are, then you could have that sort of speed, but the main way multi-cores work is to share the load between them.

Games dont tend to work any better on x64 and in some cases dont work at all, depends on how old they are and if 64bit patches have been released for specific game. Windows XP x64 is one I would likely stear clear of, it does suffer from in some cases lack of hardware drivers (so check first before installing), Vista 64bit is more supported with drivers, BUT would be very tempted to advise waiting until next year and going with Windows 7 x64.

To get the most out of 64bit computing the software needs to be written specifically for 64bit and that software is very scarce indeed, most software is compatible with 64bit OS but is not native 64bit and runs in 32bit mode, so no advantage, main advantage with going 64bit is that you can use more than 4GB of ram and the OS will see this unlike 32bit OSes.

I'm not surprised that the games run better and at higher resolutions with antialiasing turned off. Antialiasing can really cause a huge drop in performance when gaming. The idea is to find the 'sweet spot' where you can still game smoothly, but also use an acceptable amount of antialiasing, but this will depend on the game and the card. I misread your original post (due the strange font used, I think :-o ) and thought you had the HD3850, but I now see it is the HD3650, but they use the same driver so it's not an issue, except that the HD3850 is a substantially stronger video card, primarily due to the 256bit bus (the HD3650 has a 128bit bus).

    To Dear Halo;

Alright.. I finally get how core cpus work! hehe, thanks!
Okey, but I I already got all the hardware drivers needed? Then I wouldn´t have any problems with that XP64 don´t have the drivers right?

Windows 7 x64? Oh, a new Windows? :D Tell me all about ut please! :D

That´s right... Cuz as it is now I have a whole gig of ram beening useless...

    To Dear Master dlb;

    What is antialiasing really?
I wish I had a HD3850! It got really sweet benchmark scores!

Well, I think I have to buy a new graphicscard... What would you recommend under 200$?

    And Guys... You really rock!

Oooh! And btw! What do you think the computer I bought is worth? :)

Antialiasing is basically the 'rounding' of curved lines so they actually look round, instead of looking like a bunch of really small corners strung together to make a curve. It can also refer to an area of color where very subtle color changes take place, and making the color transitions smooth. For example: when looking at a sunset on your PC; antialiasing would make the different color transitions smooth instead of there being obvious separations or borders between different shades. The same principle would apply to reflections (like when water is displayed) or shading. The technical info as well as some visual examples can be found in this article from Wikipedia.

I'm an Nvidia guy. So I'll recommend one of the NVidia 9600 series video cards. The price has really dropped and you should have no problems finding one under $150. I've been running a 9600GT for about 7 months and it has done nothing but rock the games. I never have ANY lag on anything. You might be able to grab a 9800 series for right around $200, maybe less if you get a rebate.... keep in mind, with a strong video card comes the need for a stronger power supply, so be sure yours is up to the task. If you need more video card advice, or have more video card or power supply questions, please post them in the hardware forum. ;)

    Merry XMas!
