    Hi,
I have two identical Win XP Desktop PCs One has a 60gb hdd (which failed) and the other has an 80gb hdd. Both discs are Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 ata/133

So i put the 80gb disc in the machine that failed and it booted up normally, log in screen was normal but when i got in, the machine is totally unresponsive, everything takes minutes, the mouse curser trail lags badly and regularly stops for a few seconds. If i keep moving the mouse rapidly i get a series of short beeps, then the mouse starts moving again. impossible to open or close anything

I checked the BIOS and the disc is being seen and i saved the changes.

There are 2gb of ram loaded which are being seen by the system. In safe mode everything works normally. There is very little on this drive,it was a backup machine really.

There is no malware present to the best of my knowledge. (Malwarebytes,Superantispyware,MSE)

So it looks like a conflict? If so how do i suss it out?

Boot into normal mode, check in msconfig what is running and just to troubleshoot, start disabling things. Once the computer seems responsive, you know what you need to disable (not using msconfig but using appropriate software).

Also check if there are any problems with drivers. Perhaps the wrong driver is loaded.
I had three computers at my home all Dell Dimension 2400. Even though the computers were the same model, the hardware was NOT the same!

Problem is,i can't do anything in normal mode. Totally unresponsive. If i were to re-install Win XP would that get me back up and running?

    Maybe.
But did you try disabling startup items using msconfig and then booting into normal mode?

Yes,i have absolutely nothing starting at boot-up, its impossible even then, to do anything in normal mode. The only way i can get anything done is in safe mode. Frustrating!

Hi my friend , it's very simple

    Reboot your machine
Press F8 at start up going in Safe Mode
You have to follow : Start - selecting Run from right side
    Type msconfig
    Navigate to Startup tab
Un ckecking all boxes except from antivirus
    Apply
    Ok

Restarting your machine is suggested , keep an eye on this topic :wave
