Hi, I have a Win XP Pro machine, when you shut down it freezes on the blue screen that says "Windows is shutting down"

    I have tried:
-Formatting hard drive and doing a clean install of windows
-Installed Service packs 2 and 3
    -Updated all drivers
-Done a BIOS update on Motherboard (ASUS A7S8X-MX) and a firmware update on Pioneer DVD-RW drive (DVR-109)

None of which have solved the problem, which leads me to believe that it is a hardware issue, though i am not sure.

Could somepne please help me... Many thanks

    Could be software.
Open up Task Manager and end most processes except for these
You may even be able to end the svhost.exe processes and the spoolsv (that has to do with your printer). spoolsv won't end in task manager so I go into the admin tools in control panel, under services and shut the service down from there. When you reboot, it will be running again.
Then shut down. Does your system hang? If not, something in that list is causing the hang so start selectively ending some and shutting down. Eventually, you'll discover which process is causing the hang.

    Thanks for the reply...

I have tried ending all processes (except for those you mentioned) and the computer still "hangs" on shutdown.

Is there anything else you could suggest.... Much appreciated!

Thanks, I have read through that page and tried all the strategies that apply to me (e.g update the firmware on Pioneer DVD birner) and the problem is still not fixed!

I must emphasize the fact that straight after I formatted the hard drive and did a clean install of windows (ie, the first time windows started after doing so), I tried shutting it down and it froze as before on the blue screen! (at that stage I had not installed any software at all).

Does this indicate that it's not a software problem??? That something is wrong with my hardware??? Maybe the motherboard is faulty, i dont know, is there a program to test this???

    Any help much appreciated

Why did you format and do a clean install of windows?
Did it freeze before you did the BIOS update?

I formatted because I thought it was some sort of virus, spyware or program error that caused the problem. In theory, formatting and reinstalling windows should restore the PC to its original state, ie, when it was new, remove any spyware, viruses etc.

Yes it did freeze before the BIOS update.

The shut down problem may have been occuring since Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 was installed, but I am not certain of this.

One other thing you should know is that an error message was coming up (before format) when it froze on the blue screen while shutting down. It said:

    "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime library

    Runtime error

    C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Internet Security\Sfctlcom.exe

    R6025 Pure Virtual Functin Call"

I thought that this error mesage may have caused the shut down problem, but as I have said, straight after the format (Trend Micro not installed), I tried to shut down, it froze as before but with no error message. So maybe that message did not cause it

It still freezes everytime I shut down.

Is there anything else you could suggest... many thanks!

Well the first hang on shut down, before the format, appears to be software related but there could also have been a hardware problem.

Just to rule out software rather than hardware, have a look in th Event Viewer around the time of shutdown and see if there are any errors. (system log) post the event number

After I've had time to figure that out, if I get no where, the neext step is to try Process Monitor.
    Download here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...a3-4ed8-9dd6-40c84cb9e2f5.aspx?wt.svl=related

then follow these instrutions for shut down problem hangs:
I suspect the log will be large but all your are interested in is near the end when the system doesn't shut down.

If nothing shows up, the next step, if you are willing is to disconnect the Pioneer and see if that is causing the problem. Some have, in the past.
If is still hangs then perhaps it is the ASUS motherboard. I've read of some shut down problems with that mobo.

After that, I'm out of ideas. Maybe someone who knows a lot more thn me will chime in with some suggestions.

OK I've checked the system log in Event Viewer after attempting to shut down. I'll quote them (Error: name followed by event number from most recent):

    3 x " Error: Service Control Manager 7001"

    4 x "Error: Service Control Manager 7000"

    1 x "Error: DCOM 10016"

There are quite a few similar Service Control Manager errors (7000 and 7001) from when the computer started up also (they are timed a bit earlier than those mentiionad above).

I have already tried unplugging the Pioneer drive, but it still hangs on shutdown.

Hope these errors gives you some clues about whats going on. Thanks for your help!

Is your XP Pro 64 bits?
    If so, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/899965
    If not, I'll look elsewhere.

    For event id 7000
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314357
does the message say what service did not start?

Almost all the info I'm finding on event id 7001 is for 2K, not XP.

You might want to look at all your services and compare yours to XPs defaults
    go here http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
and if running 32bit XP Pro, set everything to the default value. There is also a column for 64bit XP Pro; again set everything to the default.

I'm fairly sure its a 32 bit version of windows (the machine has an AMD Sempron 2300+ CPU, I dont think its 64 bit capable)

For the time being, I will try your second and third points and see how I go.

    Thanks for this advice

I have checked the properties of the errors from the system log (7000 and 7001) and I will quote the description for each

7000: "The tmactmon service failed to start due to the following error:
A device attached to the system is not functioning"

7001: "The Trend Micro Unauthorized Change Prevention Service service depends on the tmactmon service which failed to start because of the following error:
A device attached to the system is not functioning"

From what I can gather, there is some faulty hardware! The trouble is that it does not say which device.

I believe I have ruled out the Pioneer drive (I turned the machine off, knocked the side off the case and disconnected the power cable from the drive, started the machine again and tried to shut down, but it still froze).

I have run WD hard drive diagnostic software and it passed the hard drive.

Try unplugging USB devices one at a time right before each shut down. Sometimes they can cause funny things with startup/shutdown...

It appears that Trend Micro software is creating problems with the services and your shutdown problem might be software related.
What version of Trend Micro is installed so if I head over there to look for problems, like shut down hangs, I'll be looking at the correct item.

In response to Wyatt_Earp, basically there are no USB devices attached to the PC at the moment. Thanks for the suggestion anyway!

I have Trend Micro Internet Security 2008. Now I installed it after the format (it still hangs straight after format). I read on a site about shutdown problems that you should have all the latest updates etc. So I installed Service pack 2 and discovered that Service pack 3 was available, so I installed that also.

Since then, Trend Micro has not been working properly, the firewall won't start and the change prevention thing wont start. Trend Micro are supposed to be releasing a patch soon that fixes these problems.

Do you think I should uninstall Trend Micro and install maybe Avast, Zonealarm and Spybot for the time being?

Have you run an in depth memory diagnostic? If you have more than one memory stick installed, remove all but one stick and see if the problem persists. If so, start swapping out memory sticks and trying each one. If the PC stops hanging, then we know it's a RAM problem. What about the video card? If you have an AGP or PCI video card, and on board video also, try removing the card and using the on board video. If possible, try using a different video card. Borrow one from a friend if possible. Other than RAM and video, it seems like you've done most of the other diagnostic type stuff. Oh yeah, try the same thing with the sound as you did with the video; if you have a sound card, remove it and use the on board sound, or swap out the card. Many times when XP hangs on shutdown, it's due to a device "not letting go" correctly, or at all. So XP just sits there, waiting for the device to shut itself off. This is common with sound cards and USB. Try updating the sound drivers, or completely disable the sound if possible, same with the USB. Update or disable it and see if that helps.
    Good luck!

    Thanks Dlb for the reply.

I have not run an in-depth memory diagnostic, how do I do this???

The machine only has 1 stick of RAM (a 512 MB DIMM). It also has onboard sound and video, so I cant exactly remove them! I've updated the drivers to these though. I might try disabling the sound and USB one at a time and see what happens when I shut down.

Do you think that replacing the motherboard will solve the problem?

I have uninstalled service pack 3 and now trend micro appears to be working fine. The machine still hangs on shut down. I am also getting a different message for error 7000 in system log. It now says:

"The Upload Manager service failed to start due to the following error:
The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process"

There seems to be only 1 of these errors for each shut down attempt.

I tried disabling the sound and USB ports in device manager, but the compter still hangs on shut down....(groan)

Is there anything else I could try that people could suggest... thanks!

I have fixed the Upload Manager Error in system log, I just changed a setting in the properties for Upload manager in servies in admin tools, and now it loads on startup. There are no errors occuring now in the system log. But the computer still hangs on shutdown.

Do you think I should just take it to a computer shop and get the motherboard replaced???

Do you think replacing the motherboar is the best thing to do??? Plodr said in one of his posts that the ASUS mobo's can cause shutdown problems, so I am pretty sure that's causing the problem.
