Win XP Recovery freezes...

    Hello,
    I seem to be having issues with my Recovery Console. I have HP Pavilion a810n Athlon 64 3300 + 2.47 1 gig ram XP Home / SP 2. When I attempt to go to the Recovery Console, it hangs up on the black "HP" screen with the blue scrolling dots underneath. I let it set there for 4+ hours this afternoon...
    It does not seem to do anything... Any suggestions? I do not have the XP disk, as the computer was purchased on consignment... Any help would be greatly appreciated...
