I know you said fresh install is for weaklings or something like that but you are seriously running out of options. Since you can get into your computer, you should back up all your files and do a fresh install if we can't help you.

Well, lets use an old trick I used to do back in the days I did MS support. Do a parallel install. Basically, install Windows to a new folder. Are you using a CD, where that is possible, or is it recovery media?

Because it will allow us to test two things:

    1. If its hardware problem.
    2. It will let us work with a GUI! to fix problems with the old OS. Then we simply revert back.

Thats true! I didn't think of that
    **goes back to his corner**

Unless you would like my help! xD

And the OP said that they had a CD labeled Operating System. So it is probably an OEM installation disc.

I have a Windows XP SP3 installation CD.

I forgot to mention something in my recap.

    The disk has two partitions.
First one, C: has the old Windows XP installed.
When problem occured, then I also installed winxp on second partition, D:
The problem also occured on second partition.

Can I install windows in a new folder?
Can I install it on the same partition on which they are already installed ?

Disconnect from the network. Do NOT let it connect to the net. The fact it happened to a second install is interesting.

But it seams to me that this is the third method. Or am I wrong.
I am seing that page in croatian , but here are the translated translations.

Third method: installing win xp in a new folder.
Fourth method: a fresh win xp install

How odd. English version, its method 4. :p

Yes, im keeping that option if we really fail.
But first I'd like to die honorably :)

Heh, someone translated the number wrong :-D.

Nevertheless, I see the method, it shouldn't be a problem.
    But what then ?
When I install, I should contact you from another PC, because this one must not connect to the net?

Nighty night, and thank you a lot!

Hi, I measured the booting time. It is 37 minutes.
The disk is idle all the time, except on the end.

I forgot to ask you, on which partition do you want me to install winxp in a new folder?

    to remind you:
c: (old windows, which i want to get back) -they cannot boot (firsty they could after system restore, but after a while, not even that)
d: new windows - can boot but it takes 37 minutes.

  17. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

Doesnt matter where the new windows is stored.

Hi, I hope you're still watching this.
I have installed windows in a new folder.
    Works OK, restarts OK.

    Now, what's next?

  19. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

what service pack level is the new install?

  20. scajic

    scajic Private E-2

Service Pack 3 (it's the same like the other two installations)

When did your installation (that doesn't work) last work ok? If its a point you can remember, we might be able to roll back the registry. Most of what we will be doing is hacking the old registry. I might even have you back up the hives and send them to me to examine them.

I think it is 24, or 25. of november. Somewhere around that point, I can to be more precise if needed, by examining my msn messagess because i remember talking with a friend about my issue.

Now I checked. Last message I sent from msn from old windows was
2009-11-23 01:19 AM. That's probably the last good working point..

How big are the registry hives from your broken installation? Ive attached a screenshot where they are kept, and is there a place you can upload them to?

Ok, those files have 78,3 MB.
But I compressed it into RAR so that's 12.7MB. Should I upload it to rapidshare, or send you by email?
Is my private information compromised if I upload it to rapidshare?

I did. Spent a bit of time looking at the software hive, but am not done. I had to finish coding a game for a final project.

Just so you don't think I am lying, I have been looking at your hives. You have a lot of disabled stuff, but I was hoping for a sign of malware, and I've not yet found anything.

That same config folder should have had some .evt files. Can you also send those to me?

Of course I beleive you :). Don't be silly :)
You are the only person still coping with this problem to help me and I can't say how much I appreciate your valuable time invested in helping me.

I turned on that computer now, and im going to sleep (4.40am here), and I will send you those files first thing in the morning when I and sit in front of that computer.

btw. What kind of game do you code? Is it web based? some link ?

    Adrynalyne Guest

Its the game Lightpaths, for the iPhone, but in C and using a console UI.

I'll pm you a link to it if you want. It runs under nix or Windows. This particular version I am sending is compiled for Windows though.

It was a group effort and now that the class is over, I am destroying anything that reminds me of it. Im a chemical engineer, not a programmer.

Hi, I've sent you those files few days ago, so just to tell you that in case they ended up in spam or something like that.

Btw the game is blocking.. cant put the mirror :)
lets say I enter "3 6 2", but nothin happens, but if I enter "3,6,2" then it blockes..

    A miracle happened!!
I noticed that my computer booted normally into second windows installation.
Then I said, I'll give that oldest installation a try, and try to boot it.
    It booted normally!!

It's only that my mouse doesn't work now, for some reason, and I can't make it running.

How is this possible :) ?
