where is my disk space going?

I recently installed windows service pack 2 (because I had to) and I have noticed that I am losing disk space. I freed up 300 MB and then when I restarted my computer that space was gone. I don't have system restore enabled and I disabled automatic updates so I have no idea what is eating this up. Also, everytime that I click on a webpage, I lose 1 to 2 MB. What crap from windows service pack 2 is eating my disk space? Thanks

    Why did you have to?

Look at the indexing service, it can produce enormous files.

Some software insists on SP2 being installed - so that's probably why he/she "had to"

And if you're worried about what is relatively, a tiny amount of HD space on most HD's (the 300 MB) these days, I have to assume you're using a very small HD, or just like complaining rolleyes.

I'll presume it's the former though  and I suggest you treat yourself to a bigger HD

Yeah, unless you start losing gigabytes worth of space, I wouldn't worry. Just run a good cleaner every couple of days, or every night before you turn off the PC. When you surf the web, all sort of temporary files are created, and pages get 'cached' on your hard drive so they'll load quicker as you surf. Most of this temp stuff doesn't get removed after your web seesion has ended, so cleaning is always a good idea, especially if you have a small hard drive. Try CCleaner with the default settings, or ATF Cleaner and check everything except maybe the Prefetch box....

Every so often, run a real deep cleaner like Stephen Gould's CleanUp! It finds and removes alot of things that other cleaners don't seem to find...

All of the above programs are 100% free to download and use.

There are some known problems with installing SP2, which is why I asked

Why do you have to install it?

You still haven't answered the question.

I'm not psychic and only have the knowledge of your problem and system that you supply.

So far you haven't supplied enough about either to provide any useful help.

Have you actually done what I suggested in your other thread, it has helped others in the past?

I had to use office 2007 for school and it would only run on win 2 service pack. I can't do anything. Right when I start the computer and open windows media or something, it will shut down and tell me that my virtual memory is too low.

I guess no one here is smart enough to understand why I keep randomly losing disk space after installing win service pack 2.

Installing SP2 leaves a lot of space on hard disk taken up by files you would only ever need if you were to uninstall it. Once you are sure you are happy with it:

A very big restore point will have been made. Once a new regular size one has been made in the ordinary way, clean up by going to
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup
and in 'More Options' click the bottom button to remove all but the most recent restore point

Delete the hidden folder of files that would be restored by an Uninstall: C:\Windows\$NTServicePackUninstall
Once done, if you try to use the 'Remove' for Service pack 2 in Add/remove programs, that will fail and offer to remove itself

There may also be a large folder C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download
depending on how you did the installation. That can also be deleted

Check that the installations temporary folder did get properly removed - it will be on the drive where you downloaded the setup files, so probably C: and have a long name of random letters. If it is still around, delete it. And burn the downloaded file to a CD so as to have it if you ever need to reinstall.

There will also be a large folder C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles. Do not delete this - it will be used in future by Windows File Protection - but on an NTFS disk you can compress it to save about 200MB of disk space. R-click on it, Properties, click the Advanced button, and select 'Compress'

    thank you Eric
The only ones I use are the first and last ones. Recently uninstalled and reinstalled SP2 after using Microsoft debugging tool to see why the system was locking up, seems to have done the trick.

Did you really want help, or are you just practising to be a troll :confused

You haven't given hardly any info about your system, and we're not mind readers. How big is your HD? How much real memory do you have (RAM) ? Is it a steam driven Pentium 2, or something a bit more modern?

From the scant information you've already given, I'd have to assume it's an oldish PC with a small hard drive that's nearly full. A virtual memory too low warning could be lack of HD space, as virtual memory is just a file on your HD, and if you're running out of space, Windows will not be able to create a big enough paging file
