Win XP Shutting down?

I hope I'm in the right place! My windows shuts down every time I go to my documents, it has a blue screen that says: windows has shutdown to prevent damage to your computer. Has an error stop message:0x0000008e. Says driver781xdnt5.dll needs to be updated or disabled. Can you help me please? I don't know what to do!

 

Have you done the requisite malware removal? If not, I recommend that you run through the tutorial at that link to ensure no nasties are casuing this problem for you. (I mention this because I can't find any reference to this DLL online or on my own windows installation, whereas you normally can for legit files)

You may also want to reference this Microsoft KB titled, Random "0x0000008E" Error Message on a Blue Screen in Windows XP, which seems related to this problem.

This also seems like it could be a driver issue. Try using the following instructions to re-install your video drivers:

1. Right-click 'My Computer'
2. Select 'Manage'
3. On the 'Computer Management' windowk, click 'Device Manager'
4. On the hardware list to the right, expand 'Display Adapters'
5. For each item listed here, right-click, and select 'Uninstall' (take note of what is listed here)
6. Reboot the machine

When windows starts again, it should reinstall drivers for your video cards. If none of the the above helps, try updating the drivers by following the steps above, but clicking 'Update Drivers' instead of 'Uninstall' in step 5. The wizard will guide you through.

If THAT doesn't help, please post back with the make/model of your video card as noted in step 5.

 

I did a spybot search & destroy, CCleaner,& panda online scan, now it seems to be doing alright. I went to my documents 3 or 4 times & it didn't shut down. If it happens again I'll repost. Thanks for the advice! :wave :major
