    Hi all -

    My computer (Lenovo T61 laptop running Win XP sp3) will no longer go into hibernate mode. The computer will show the message "Preparing to hibernate", then will beep once, and return to the Windows session that was running.

    This problem started happening yesterday morning; before that I had no problems and was able to hibernate regularly (just occasionally).
    [And yes, hibernation is enabled under Power Options; I've tried disabling, rebooting, and then re-enabling, and it still won't work. (Standby works fine.)]

    Note, I did suffer some type of malware attack at about this same time yesterday:

    -I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and it found 6 or so infected objects;
    -I then ran CA Anti-Virus, which found and cured one infection;
    -then I ran Spybot S&D which found a couple more (minor, I think).
    -Also ran Adaware, which found a couple of minor things. (I try to keep this laptop regularly "clean".)

    I've noticed in System Tools Event Viewer under System, the following error each time I try to hibernate:

    Source: Ftdisk
    Event ID: 45
    Type: Error
    Description: "The system could not sucessfully load the crash dump driver."
    ('Sucessfully' here is spelled with one 'c')

    Again, it appears I get this message each time I try to hibernate. Yesterday morning, when the problem first occurred, in addition to the EventID 45 I also got this message (just once, I believe):

    Source: Ftdisk
    Event ID: 49
    Type: Error
    Desciption: "Configuring the Page file for crash dump failed. Make sure there is a page file on the boot partition and that is large enough to contain all physical memory."

    I've researched on Microsoft support and via Google; haven't found a solution. I have tried deleting atapi.sys and clearing pagefile on shutdown (via Control panel Administartative tools, local security policy, local policies> security options, and changing theoption for "Shutdown: Clear Virtual Memory Pagefile"... but the problem still persists (still cannot get the system to hibernate, get "Preparing to hibernate" briefly, then one beep, and then return to Windows session).

    Maybe a corrupt hiberfil.sys? But it can't be deleted unless hibernation is turned off, at which point it goes away anyway (and as noted, I have tried disabling, rebooting, and then re-enabling hibernation.. to no avail).

    Do you experts have any ideas? Any would be much appreciated.

    Did you ever get a fix for this? I have the same (after cleanign up after a fake AV virus using Malwarebytes), and I'm stuck!

    Welcome to Major Geeks,medconn.

    If you are also getting the low page file message, try to increase the size and try again.
    No guarantees, but can't hurt,can it?

    Did try playing around with the page file as well... no dice.

    Never did get/find a fix after trying absolutely everything I and an expert at my company could think of... had to resort to using Standby or Shutting Down. Crikey! (My ultimate solution was to get a new - and larger - HD, and re-image/re-install.)

    Main thing is you got the problem resolved.
