My mother's computer will not start up. Basically what happens is the Windows XP Home screen starts up but then the monitor screen turns off and the computer still runs but never goes to the user icon screen. There is this screen before that to choose start in Safe mode, Safe mode with dos prompt, or last known good config. The only one that works is safe mode with command prompt but I don't even know what to do when it gets to that point. Does she have a virus?

Interesting. If it is showing safe mode, without you prompting it to, there is usually a problem. It will often go into safe mode because of a hardware or drive problem. Are there any messages? You could reinstall XP, if you want to go that route.

Yes there are lines of messages and the all start like this:
    multi (0)disk(0)rdisk(0)parttion(2)\windows\system32\drivers\

and then have something different after the \drivers\ part like atapi.sys, bootdsk, ndisk, and others, then the monitor goes off like I pushed the off button
