win xp wont update

The system is Win xp
Media center Edition
Version 2002 SP3
32 bit

I go to the update site and i get the following message:

The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view.

 

Hey buddy, did you go to Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Services, and check if BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) is started ??

 

Had something like this happen to me yesterday after installing XP Pro a couple of days ago. BITS disappeared from the Services list. Updates quit, but I didn't realize BITS was missing until later when investigating why updates quit working. When they quit, I knew I was close to finishing all the XP SP3 updates, so I made the decision to fire up IE8 and check to see what was left, go and get them, and then install them manually...about 20 for XP, Office, and .NET. Anyway, if anyone is noticing BITS missing here is a rather elaborate fix that will repair Windows Updates when missing BITS is the problem:

the error msg i get on the site is [Error number: 0x8024402F]

 

in safe mode noticed avast was on desktop even though i removed it recently.

downloaded avast uninstaller.

now windows update works! huzzah!
