Win32.Agent.pz, Virtumonde and more

This system is so badly infected it's hard to know where to begin. The fixes for Win32.Agent.akk, Virtumonde and Smitfraud have all been run, and the procedures for cleaning XP have been followed as closely as possible. Note that Malwarebytes and Combifix both failed to run. Spybot can't fix Win32.Agent infection (asks for reboot after fixing and then wants to fix again et al) and Virtumonde keeps returning. Further log files to follow.

More logs. Is this system too far gone and time to reinstall XP, or can you help?

    Thanks in advance

We need the requested logs from ComboFix and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Please attach them.

Whoever is using this PC needs to stop doing what they have been doing!!!!! And they need to put proper protection in place. No antivirus, no antispyware blocker, and no firewall are installed. No wonder it is so badly infected ( as you will see from the length of the below fix ).

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe,

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thanks chaslang. The logs you requested after running the fixes you requested are attached.

Note per my first post, Malwarebytes and Combifix both fail to run (even in safe mode). Malwarebytes hangs after 1-2 seconds 'preparing for the scan', and combifix starts, opens the blue command window and then promptly quits.

    Thanks

Re-downloaded malwarebytes and combifix. Malware bytes still hangs preparing for the scan, but combifix ran this time - log file attached

    Thanks

Okay that't much better but we still have more to do. Now that ComboFix runs, we will make use of it in this fix. Make sure that you follow all steps in the order written and do not miss anything.

Run this WareOut Removal and attach the log at the end of the below. I will remind you.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe,
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0D24F922-7FA0-45A4-A458-1AB240039E13} - C:\WINDOWS\ddcyawus.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {857B7A73-E782-4355-A881-1E66561B7030} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\geeda.dll (file missing)r.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05\bin\jusched.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.

    Then attach the below logs:
    • FixWareOut log
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thanks chaslang. Everything ran fine - the F2 entry you referred to in hjt wasn't present. IE was crashing after yesterday's fixes, but seems to be stable now.

    Thanks for your help.

We have a little more to do.

Do you see the below file? If so, see if you can delete it and make sure after a reboot that it is still gone.
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\cstfi.exe

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.

    Then attach the below log:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

  9. vkinetic

    vkinetic Private First Class

    Thanks chaslang.

The file 'cstfi.exe' did not exist in the Sytem32 directory of Windows.

The fixme.reg successfully merged with the registry.

    MGLogs.zip attached.

I had temporarily installed Bullguard Security 8.0 prior to receiving your last message (I uninstalled it before doing your latest fixes). Bullguard installed successfully and was fully functional which is a good sign. Bullguard in my experience will not normally install properly if there are issues with the machine, so this is a good thing. If you think my installing Bullguard while waiting for your next message was not a good move, let me know - I can restore the drive from an image I took prior to installing Bullguard, and redo your latest fixes.

    Looking good - thanks!

Sorry about this! I had a mistake in the previous registry patch and thus it did work as I wanted. The below will fix it.

Now re-run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.

    Then attach the below log:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
You can then get started on the below assuming the above patch added successfully.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop & renamed it like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\cf" /u
        • Notes: The space between the cf" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\cf folder from combofix.
    2. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    3. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    4. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    5. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    7. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    8. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    9. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks chaslang. While waiting for your response I ran another Spybot scan and it again found 3 registry keys and described them as Win32.Agent.pz. I had Spybot fix these. I did another highjackthis scan and there were three entries that were the same keys as reported by Spybot:

    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-19\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\System32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'LOCAL SERVICE')
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-20\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\System32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'NETWORK SERVICE')
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [Picasa Media Detector] C:\Program Files\Picasa2\PicasaMediaDetector.exe (User 'SYSTEM')

which I had HJT fix. After reboot and a new scan Spybot found no infections.

Your last fix.reg was successfully merged with the registry.

    The new MGLogs.zip is attached.

The system is working fine with two exceptions:

Autoplay no longer works (not a big deal); and
    Bullguard cannot install it's firewall.

This is curious becasue it did successfully install including the Firewall prior to implimenting your fix from yesterday. The Windows Firewall is running however. Any clues as to how to fix this Bullguard issue would be appreciated.

Aside from that though, the system seems just fine.

Thanks again for all your help.

You're welcome. Your logs are clean.

    See if this helps:

I'm not sure why it will not install now. Nothing that we removed in the last step was even really malware. It was just a minor registry patch to cleanup somethings from out cleaning procedure. And then my final instructions just had you remove unnecessary things from running the READ ME.

At first I was going to suggest that you shut down any protection software before installing it, but when I look at your logs I remembered that you don't have any protection installed....not even an antivirus.

All I can suggest is asking BullGuard why their software is so tempermental.
