Hi all - back again with a question. I am running Windows 7 and, on the occasional scan, I get a message saying I have this Win32/Bamital.A Trojan.

Windows Essentials scans and says it cannot remove it b/c of some adminstrator thing.

I run Malwarebytes AntiMalware software and the scan comes up clean.

So one program shows it is there, the other doesn't.

    What should I do?

    Thanks!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything. Note if you cannot save things in C:\ then just save them to your Desktop. Make sure that you have disable UAC and rebooted first if you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!

    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Hi- thanks for your response. I've attached the log from Super Anti Spyware.

Now I still have Combofix and the MGTools program which I downloaded per the instructions but b/c the scan was clear, we're all ok?

This is odd - I haven't rerun the Essentials scan but I might to see what pops up.

Here are the MalwareBytes and Combo log. I tried running the MG tools and it started hanging at the anaylse system part....created some text file and then when I stopped the program, each time I try and run it again, I get the prompt asking if I want to allow to make changes. if I say yes, I get the repeat prompt. If I say no, I get access denied, prompt, access denied, etc umpteen times until its says it couldn't find some files. etc...

As stated in the instructions, you must disable UAC and reboot first before running MGtools.exe. Also you MUST right click on MGtools.exe and select Run As Administrator.

It must be like herding kittens for you guys...:)

thanks again for all your help. mind you, yesterday in the midst of all this scanning and zipping and logging, Windows Security came up again with the old Virus detection of Bamital.

Where did it tell you it was located? The full path to the file, please.

Use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\Users\lil-nicky\Local Settings\TEMP\UuU.uUu
    C:\Users\lil-nicky\Local Settings\TEMP\XxX.xXx

I take it that your G: drive is an external?

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.

See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif
Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    1. Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    2. Click OK at the warning to continue to use The Avenger
    3. Do not change any of the check box options!
    4. Shut down your protection software now to avoid possible conflicts.
    5. Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of The Avenger
    6. Now click the http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/9159/executeavenger.jpg button
    7. Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    8. Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when The Avenger finishes running.
    9. Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    10. A log file from The Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will pop-up for you to view when you login after reboot.
    11. Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Now tell me what malware issues you are still having.

Hi Tim - thank you for all your help and belated Merry Christmas! I did run the file as instructed and I did notice when I closed off that there was a brief flash of a what looked like a jigsaw puzzle piece on a blue screen.

Nevertheless the Avenger did not appear succesful:

Did you copy everything in the quote box? Was the external plugged in when you did this?

More specifically, was the first line copied this Files to delete:

The log from Avenger indicates it was not. The Quote: text should not be copied. Only what is in the quote box.

    Bluesbreaker Corporal

yes - I copied this exactly and pasted:

    Files to delete:
    G:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Server\hlp.dat

just like that into the script box and hit execute.

Try it again and make sure that there are no blank lines or any other lines above Files to delete:

I will. Interestingly enough, my CD Rom doesn't work, or can't be found. Windows Media player is now not working. Nero isn't working. theyre' just hanging, or "scanning system for supported devices"

Then when it does come up, the application(s) are "Not Responding".

This is what one homegroup folder looks like now, not sure you can see the files with the little arrows.

And of course, I need to burn a cd in 40 minutes as I'm heading out of town! figure my luck...

Since there was no malware found in your logs, I suggest you post in the software forum to try to figure out the problems with your OS.
