Best I can tell, I was infected early the morning of 14-Dec-2008. My background changed to big red and blue and yellow squares, and I started getting the red dot, with white x in the middle, and a message that said I was infected with the win32.banker.FS and Trojan.SpyAgent.DA. The message also encouraged me to download a spyware program to remove them (which I did not). Instead I went to MajorGeeks and followed the procedure to remove malware.

I think everything worked, but I still get a wierd screen (large colored blocks) when awaiting my desktop to appear (during boot). After I am fully up, the colored blocks are gone, and all of my desktop icons show, but instead of the windows blue background, I have a grey one (no big deal, but not as it was before the invasion).

Attached are the first three logs for your review. I will attach the fourth one under a separate post, same thread. Could you review the logs to see that everything is okay.

Also, how can I get back to the standard Windows background screen? It seems that it has disappeared.

    Thanks in advance.

    Signed, lightweight :)

Here is the fourth log file for MGTools results. Please take a look, and confirm that the hellish code is gone. Upon confirmation, I will then toggle my System Restore.

One other comment...there are multiple users on the Windows account, and when I log in as the other user, there doesn't seem to be any infection...that is, it only occurs for me as user. I don't know about the Admin user, as I have only logged in under admin in "safe" mode. I don't remember my Admin password!, however it must not have been set, since i could access Admin in safe mode, and the bug didn't reset the password (thankfully)!

    Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Not sure if my followup post made it. Here are the MBTools results, just in case.

Thanks in advance for checking that i am okay now.

I am not seeing any malware in your logs. Is the screen display the only issue you are having now?

Yes, the screen was the only issue, and I since changed my background/theme to one I had from Windows Plus! and now the wierd screen has also disappeared.

So, sounds like I have a clean bill of health?

Thanks so much for your expert service.

One other thing...I was wondering...where does one start to learn how to troubleshoot/interpret the log files that the various malware utilities provide? I would like to start reading about it.

Good to know......if you wish to learn about malware there are a few sites that you can learn some of the logs with: malwareremoval.com

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)

    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
