Hi, I became infected with this trojan about 2 hours ago so I logged onto your site and followed the steps under Special Removal Procedures. The problem appears to be fixed but the last step says to post my "smitfiles.txt log to a message." The only thing I can recall that I had to manually delete was this "%System32%\cfgmngr32.dll" Thanks very much for the help.

Also, I have a "strCodec" folder installed on my computer that was created about the same time I got the trojan. Can I manually delete this folder?

So it turns out I'm stupid and accidently deleted the "cfgmgr32.dll" and not the "cfgmngr32.dll" It only effects my iPodService, which updates my iPod, so it's not a huge deal but I definitely do need to fix that. The error message tells me to re-install the iTunes software but I did that and it doesn't work. I've found some websites with this for download, is it safe to download that? Or what else should I do about it? Thanks.

What you can try is to try and repair the deleted .dll by runing scannow on your PC.

Go to Start, type sfc /scannow in the run box and press enter, you will need an original XP cd and not the restore CDs that some OEM makers hand out with their PCs.

or if you came across http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?cfgmgr32 then this site as as far as I know always been ok for .dll file downloads, but once you paste it back into the original folder it came from you will have to register it, by clicking Start > Run and in the run box type regsvr32 cfgmgr32.dll and hit enter.

I downloaded the file and pasted it into the location but I get this message when I try and register it and I get this message "cfgmgr32.dll was loaded, but the Dllregister server entry point was not found. The file can not be registered." However, my iPod can no update and I dont seem to have any other problems that I am aware of anymore. Thanks for the help.

That dll maybe corrupted or a very different version that the one you originally had, did you try the Scannow /SFC ?

If software came with your iPod have you re-installed it?

cfgmgr32.dll is a Microsoft file! You may be able to just copy a backup from C:\windows\system32\dllcache back into the c:\windows\system32 folder. Normally a backup is found in the dllcache folder.
