Good, I thought you got the restore message and then just a blank screen. I can get some sleep tonight. ;)

We are still thinking you might have a problem that is causing the crashes. So I would create a restore point so you have a current one.

Go to Start and then type Create in the the Search box but don't hit <enter>. "Create a Restore Point" will come up in the list so click that. Then in the window that opens click the Create button and just give it a name.

Get your important stuff and see how it goes. If you never burnt your Toshiba recovery DVDs you might want to do that while things are running. Would be in All Programs and something like Toshiba Utilities.

You did a great job with some very difficult commands, you can be proud of yourself. :)

One thing is, if you have a problem again with the Facebook crash or any crash where it won't boot. Don't let the CD automatically fix the error. I think we should make a copy of the current BCD before letting the automatic fix anything. That way we could just use the copy without going through all that mess. If things work well for a while we can just leave that alone but you don't have things set up for the list of 5 choices to come up without the CD so we might want to look at that later. Or be aware that you want to keep that CD available if you have any problems in the future.

I am definitely proud... Thank you. :)

I will try to get as much done tonight as I can, but I am going down hill fast. :-D I'm just wondering if I should shut it down tonight or leave it be until tomorrow.

I'd splurge and leave it on tonight. You will have to test it sometime but take the night off and deal with it tomorrow.

There is always a Live linux CD for emergency retrieval of files if it ever comes to that. It would just give you a windows-looking desktop and you could get your files copied over to USB. It would be a piece of cake after what you just accomplished. :) Good night.

    Did not know that existed!

I got most of my stuff off. I'll leave it on tonight and get back with ya tomorrow.

Sleep well and good night :)

I looked into my toshiba recovery media creator and it wants to use 4 DVDs which I don't have right now, so that will have to wait. After leaving it on all last night and today, it was just fine. I created a new restore point.

In the end (the last few days, I guess?), I did get the 5 options without the cd - it would ask for my Windows password, but it looked different... just a box on a black screen, and then it would stay at the recovery screen.

Is there anything else you wanted me to do?

Still working! Left it on (but closed) for the week and it's still good. Here's the file you wanted!

I tested the automatic fix and it worked fine on mine so I think we should just try it on yours.

Backup the current BCD. So open the cmd prompt from Windows by using the Run as Administrator option. Then type/copy the following command:

    bcdedit /export c:\bcdshort

    Then close command prompt.

Have you tried restarting the laptop at all this week? I think we should go ahead and restart to make sure it works through a reboot. Then we can add the entry.

    Ok, did it!

I just restarted, all is well.

Good. Basically we just want to start from the CD and when it looks for your Win7 installation it will find it then offer an automatic fix for startup problems.

When you click on the show details tab it should say it will be adding an entry that includes a .wim file. The technical part of the message will include something like this:

The drive letter and number won't match but the entry it is adding should make reference to a Winre.wim file. If that is what it says go ahead hit the "Repair and restart" or similar wording button. If it says something completely different then just hit cancel and let me know. If you let the automatic repairs be made then restart to Windows and go back to cmd, run as administrator and run this command:

    bcdedit /enum all > C:\enum3.txt

And upload that enum3.txt file here in your post.

Just want to make sure this is right. Here's what the details say:

I'll repeat the steps on mine real quick to make sure that first line is ok.

I think it will be fine but just want to make sure you have a second computer to get back to the forum if you have a problem. If not I will include steps to restore this current working BCD should something go wrong in my next post.

Yes, I have another computer to use, no worries there.

I don't have the first line about repairing the bootmgr setting but the second part is what we were looking for. I think we should just let it do the automatic repair. It will make a backup of the original and we have one as well.

Do the repair and if any problems it will fairly easy to switch copies if necessary.

I let it repair and restart and it booted up just fine. Here's the file.

    Perfect!

    All done.

You can now try to forget you ever heard the term BCD. I know I will. :-D

Edit: If you want to move some of those BCD backups from C:\ into your bootold folder that is fine. If you have any questions about which ones let me know but BCD-From_sysr and BCD_backup and BCDshort can all go into bootold if you want. Not sure if you have any others.

I can definitely forget that term ;)

Where are those files and where exactly do I put them? How many are there?

They are just backups of the BCD we made. They are tiny so no harm in keeping them or at least keep the BCDshort file.

There are a couple sitting in the root of the C: drive. You also have a folder named bootold there. I would just keep the bootold folder and drag any BCD files you don't want cluttering up your drive in there. Then enum2.txt and enum3.txt can be deleted.

If you want me to give you a list open a cmd prompt and type:
    cd..
    cd..
    dir>dir.txt

And upload the file. I can tell you which files we created and no longer need or that you might want to save. If they don't bother you, you can just leave them.

    I don't mind keeping them.

    Good enough.

I was saying to one of the guys on the forum you were a pleasure to work with both very patient and a quick learner. Perfect combination. I'm glad we got things sorted. :)
