so i get home from my brothers and all the sudden my usbs on my laptop started to not work. im finging out that my fat32 partition works but my ntfs doesnt but shows in explorer. i plugged it into my win7 desktop and both didnt show. im kinda hoping its not my hard drive its self. also when i go to disk management it just sits blank till i unplug from the usb(both pcs). device manager also showsthe drive name but when i plug it into the usb port it shows the fat32 drive letter with WPDFileSystem Volume Driver (supposed to be the ntfs partition). ive uninstalled all usb drivers and restarted and got nowhere.

    please help

Update: went into device manager got it to populate the disc drive comes up weird (uploaded pic). i still dont understand why the 16gb fat32 partition is accesable but the ntfs partition. it shows in partition wizard shows that it still has my files in it but still disk manager freezes after a period of time while loading.

Update2: I was able to recover files incase but even though partition wizard is able to format I still can't do anything to the drive with windows. In explore it shows the drive and drive letter but just says local drive not label. Stayed up last night hoping for help but I don't know what's going on

surprised still no help/answers but anyways another update. chkdsk through cmd gives unexpected error 696e647863686b2e 1234. i can change the letter assigned but cant format or nothing. in partition wizard i did a surface scan and bad sectors show up. im almost going to call toshiba and get a replacement but then i have to wait. hdtune gives a interface crc error count. hope this helps you guys to figure on what to do

Not surprising you are not getting responses because 8.1 is very new. You are going to have to be patient for one of the Geeks who runs 8.1 to check in.

I offer no help with Vista, 8 or 8.1 because I never ran them and have had zero experience.

i know that its on win8.1 but i dont think its a driver issue its more of a hard drive thing. i just went through partition wizard and it showed all my files are still there

I have had some 8.1 issues as well.
For now be sure to back up to NAS or Win 7 machine. If your files are there, move the drive to a Win 7 machine or USB enclosure and back them up.

Are you doing a secure boot?
If so, try turning secure boot off and CSM on in the BIOS

i was able to back it up with easeus data recovery it showed my files were still there got what i needed. i tried taking the drive out of the casing and plug it in that way but its not even working but anyways what should i turn off and on? my laptop is a dell inspiron n5110 it works better then what the desktop can do with the drive.
