Win8 or 8.1?

    Got a new laptop with Windows8. Downloaded a start tab. Do I need to upgrade to 8.1? What features will that provide? Or should I just stick with 8?

    Windows 8 and 8.1 are being retired for updates. You need 8.1 Update 1.

    As for differences, the versions are enhancements of each other. You will want the latest.

    When I last updated my 8.1 the new update was list in available updates. 650mbyte or so update. I had to skip it due to low bandwidth and chance of signal loss on my wireless. If I had a wired I would go for it.

    Make sure you have all 8.0 updates from Windows Update.

    You can then get 8.1 from the Windows Store.

    Then install all updates from Windows Update after that.

    Yes, this is all free of charge.

    When I updated the Free Win 8.1 Update was available in the Windows Store.

    It will install automatically as long as you have WU on automatic. I don't know of any sustainable argument against this, though I'm aware many choose not to do so.

    I did the upgrade back when it first became available and it took hours to finish. I just assumed it was my slow DSL at the time. Not sure how long it actually took because I fell asleep. LOL
