How do I do it? I want to swap hard drives on a Win98 computer and need to copy the files on the old hard drive to the new hard drive and preserve the long file names.

If you're replacing your boot drive you need to image it - copying files will not copy the MBR. Try Redo https://sourceforge.net/projects/redobackup/ or look for the manufacture's tools - they usually supply an image tool.

I just downloaded it, but it's too large. :(

When you image, or,clone a hard drive, it needs enough room on the existing hard drive to store the copy, before copying.
It may work better, if you did it externally, as I said in a previous post ,using the hard drive dock, and the free version of Partition Wizard,in another computer.

I'm thinking of having both drives installed, copying the files, then removing the old drive.

    I have deleted my post.
I suggested a backup program but it wouldm't be running in dos mode.

    Good luck.

I think you have already been advised that copying files won't do. For the new drive to be bootable you need to clone or image the outgoing drive. I would use a couple of cheap drive caddies for this and a free imaging program such as Aomei Backupper running on a later version of Windows for which you need access to a suitable computer.

Aomei Backupper is too large for the task. :( Is there another program to do the task?

Too large for what? You need to tell us what you are using.

I mean it might fit on the old hard drive but barely: the drive is about 3/4 full. :(

BTW, I don't understand what you mean by "what I'm using."

You are misunderstanding. The file you say is too big is only the Aomei installer. You can run the installer from any attached drive, including flash drives. It is used to install the Aomei program with which you can then clone a drive or image it. However you cannot install Aomei in Windows 98, it needs at least XP. I did say in #7 you would need access to a later computer to do what you need.
