    After getting settings restored, I am getting IE exception screens saying that it must close because of a fault with kernel32.dll. I tried to download the mspwlupd.exe that is supposed to solve the problem, but got a screen full of machine language...and no download. Any ideas?

    Matacumbie--Yes that is what I tried to solve the Kernel32.dll problem. But when I clicked to download the patch, I got a page of machine language.
    The error hasn't recurred yet, and I have to get to the field and don't have time to surf and try and re-create the error message.
    It appears as a dialog box, not bsod--IE has encountered a problem and needs to shut down--there is a box to check for automatically re-starting IE.
    When I click details, I get the Invalid Page Fault in kernel32.dll at 0167.xxxxx
    Again many thanks for your efforts. Should it happen again I will try and get a screen shot and send that to you.
    Also, re starting the 'puter didn't help with the graphics problem. I've learned that is the first thing to do, to clear a problem. Again, many thanks Steve.

    OK. Wait and see what it say's for sure and then maybe try a few things. I'm thinking the error would look something like below.

    IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll

    IEXPLORER caused an Invalid Page Fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at
    0167:bff87ede

    Response to Matacumbie

    Steve--tried to reply to your post and got the error message both times;
    IE caused an invalid page fault in kernel32.dll in 0167:bff7a388. So far, out of three sites that I have been on this afternoon, the only time I got that message was when I clicked on 'Post Reply' on MajorGeeks.
    The article you linked in your response said one part wouldn't likely work with Win98, so I have done nothing else. If I need to edit the registry, I am comfortable with that as long as I have details as provided in your link.
    Sorry that this is dragging out, but I really appreciate your efforts to assist me. Thanks

    Matacumbie--sorry it took so long--IE wouldn't let me get to this point. Finally I got friend at my ISP to burn a download of Firefox--wasn't able to download anything. Now, things are back to normal--knock wood.
    She said that IE6 was bad about problems such as this and that Micro$oft wasn't interested in a patch.
    CWShredder found one problem and fixed it. Adaware found 6 and removed them.
    Again thanks for all your time and thoughts on this. I really appreciate your efforts.
