I have a Belkin wireless G router and a Belkin USB wireless G NIC, both on XP w/sp2 PCs. I also have two older PCs in the kids rooms, both running Win 98. The documentation for the USB NIC states Win 98SE and newer in its specs, but I want to try it on the older PCs. What do I need to do to get desireable results? Do I need different drivers to make it work? Am I pizzing up a rope?
[while awaiting a response, I may go try it out]

I'm not fond of wireless, but the cd should contain the win98 drivers, or check out the manufacturer website for the drivers.

Stable Functional USB was one of the upgrades that made the Win98SE.

So you need to upgrade your pre Win98SE USB to SE level. It might be that you can find the USB upgrade files by searching the Net (like google Win98 USB).

If you have to pay for upgrade you probably better of upgrading to Win XP Home.

http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif I installed it onto one of the Win98 PCs and it is working great. I installed no additional drivers, just the installation CD that came with the Belkin USB network adapter. I did have to do one thing differently, http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/confused.gif and I don't really understand why. For some reason, the PC did not recognize one of the files on the CD as a required file. I was prompted to install the file manually. When I browsed to the file location on the CD, it was still not recognized. I copied the file from the CD to a floppy, then browsed to the floppy and that corrected it. So far, so good.
I must say, the USB adapter will be a convenient wireless tool. One small investment of about $35, and now I can temprarily connect any PC in the house at any moment.
Consequently, the other PC with Win98 has a dead CD drive so I'll have to get creative or spend a few bucks if I want it connected.

Well, if you want the cheap way, just disconnect the hard drive from the machine with a bad cd, then connect it to a machine with a working drive, then create a new folder on the newly connected drive, copy the drivers from the cd to that new folder/directory., then return that hard drive to its home/original place and install from there.

I set up the wireless network with 128 bit encryption. I think the firewall of the router is turned on by default. Is this sufficient security (assuming I have no TOP SECRET Pentagon files stored at home)? Should I do anything additional to protect the folders that I have shared on the network? With BOTH the firewall of the router ON, and the firewalls of each of the individual PCs ON, am I limiting any desirable behavior or functions?
